Entering a fraternity or sorority is one of the biggest decisions a college student will ever make. You aren't deciding how may credits to take for the semester or how many hours you'll be spending in the library. Instead, you'll be deciding which family you'll belong to for the rest of your life, and that decision weighs heavily on your readiness to embark on that journey. Here are some ways to know if you are ready to join Greek life.
1. You are committed.
Do you find yourself fully involved in every activity you're apart of? I don't mean being present at every meeting and participating in a few group activities. I mean you go the extra mile for your group and you do everything in your power to make sure that your group is doing the best it can to succeed in reaching its goal.
2. You understand respect.
Not only for authoritarians, but for people and for yourself. Being in a Greek organization means respecting your line brothers and sisters and the dedication they had to overcome their pledge process. It also means having enough respect for yourself to know what kind of treatment you'll be willing to receive from your organization.
3. You're passionate.
Fraternities and sororities aren't just about partying and wearing cool jackets. Each organization has their own philanthropy, which means that they have a cause they are passionate about and instill that value in all of their members. You should be able to have a passion for a cause and choose an organization that has the same values, so that you're able to relate and fully commit yourself to that organization and show your passion.
4. You're educated on Greek life.
In order to be dedicated to an organizaton, you have to know about all of the requirements you need to meet in order to join. Some organizations need their new members to be available at specific times and days. Not only do you need to meet the requirements of the organization, you must meet the requirements of your colleges Greek Senate. They will give you the minimum requirements for volunteer work, GPA and even college credits. You must educate yourself, so that you don't waste your time and so you can understand and commit yourself to reaching those requirements.
5. You're disciplined.
Being a member of Greek life requires you to be disciplined. When you're in an organization, you're no longer seen as an individual on campus. You're looked at as a wearer of letters, a member that earned their right to wear their letters. To wear those letters, you need to discipline yourself and abide by the rules that the organization instills.
Being in an organization requires you to be commited, respectful, passionate, educated and disciplined. When thinking of joining of a Greek organization, it's important to know that you're fully ready to embark on the journey to becoming a member of an organization. These characteristics will not only help you realize if you're ready to join Greek life - Having them will help you choose an organization that you'll be able to fully commit yourself to.
