We all have a person or persons we promise to be best friends FOREVER with. Sometimes that promise can be kept effortlessly and you guys count year after year of beautiful friendship. But most of the time friendships hit rough patches and the promises for forever become forgotten. A lot of things go into a friendship and sometimes due to distance or getting too comfortable we don't realize what's happening to a relationship that once used to mean the world to us. If you're going through possibly losing your best friend or just want to think of fun, creative ways to make sure your BFF stays your best friend forever, see if you can get some inspiration from these 10 things.
1. Plan ahead and pick special dates to see your friend.
If you and your best friend are being separated by distance because of attending different colleges, pick a special day you're both free and make sure you guys both show up to this reunion. Do something unforgettable like go to a concert, visit a museum, or something you guys both love to do. Even if you and your best friend aren't separated by distance, pick a date and give yourselves something to look forward to doing with your best friend.
2. Make sure you're not forgetting to keep in touch.
A lot of times friendships fall apart because we take for granted the little things we can do. A text message might seem like a small thing, but keeping in touch with your best friend and getting to know what's going on in their life is important. If you don't know what's upsetting them or what's getting them excited, you're boarding a one-way train out of their life. Make your friendship fun. If you can't text them the whole day, make sure you give them a call or FaceTime them before bed. Sometimes hearing the voice of a loved one or seeing them (virtually in this instance) makes you realize how much you miss them.
3. Start or keep traditions.
Most long-lasting establishments have traditions they follow. It doesn't matter if it's once a month or once a year, just make a tradition and follow it. It makes you excited that on this date you'll be doing ________ again for the fifth time with your best friend.
4. Don't forget who your best friend is and all you've been through together.
Friendships often fall apart because one party finds other friends and begins to neglect the other party. Never forget your best friend. Never forget all you guys have been through together, and never forget a single memory you've shared. Your new friends might be closer to you in distance, or cooler, or for some other reason, but who was there for you when you needed someone the most? There should never be a time you should put someone loyal who was there for you during good and bad times after someone who might only be there for the good times. If you think about all your friend has put into you and play back all you've gone through, you should without a doubt pick your best friend over any friend.
5. Don't get too comfortable and take on every day with your best friend like you rule the world together.
It's okay to get comfortable with your best friend, but you should never get too comfortable. Don't ditch a hangout with them and promise you'll make it up to them later--chances are you probably won't. Don't assume they'll be okay with you not texting them for a day, because that's one day you've missed out on making another memory with them. Treat your best friend like your best friend. Share everything with them. Make sure you're talking to them, because the longer you guys go without talking, the easier it is for you guys to forget about one another. Let them be the first one to know about something exciting or something sad.
All in all keeping a friendship strong can be hard. But if you're both putting in your 110 percent of effort, it'll get easier. If you feel you're not being treated right, bring it up. Make your best friend a part of your life, and make sure they're making you a part of theirs. Never forget to appreciate them and never take little things for granted. Appreciate them every chance you get and see them as much as possible.
