5 Ways To Do More Than Just Protest

Being politically active isn't as hard as it seems.

Since the election and inauguration of our new president, Donald Trump, there have been multiple protests in nearly every major city. While these protests are a great way to get your voice heard and get involved, they need to be backed up by solid action. Here are some ways you can do the dirty work, be politically involved, and walk the talk. Anyone can do it.

1. Contact your representatives

Your senators and representatives in Washington are obligated to listen to their constituents if they want to get re-elected. If you are 18 or older, make sure to let them know you are a voter. Contact them about a specific issue, and how you want them to respond. You can call them or e-mail them, but it has been said that handwritten letters are the most effective.

You can also attend your representatives' town hall meetings when they are in your area.

2. Vote

The most obvious way to get politically involved is to vote! Still, the United States has one of the most abysmal voting turnout of any democracy in the world. It's important to not just vote every four years for a president, but to vote for your representatives in Congress when they are up for reelection as well. Also, pay attention to your local and state elections.

3. Donate

If you have the funds to do so, you can donate to organizations or campaigns you support. Even small amounts can help.

4. Get informed and inform others

It's important to make sure you are armed with real facts and information before acting on issues. You want your stances to be supported by hard evidence, so if people ask you about them, you can explain why you believe what you do. You can also use the knowledge you gain to inform others. Even just starting conversations with your peers about current events or sharing credible articles can help spread knowledge and keep people informed. In the world of alternative facts, it's important to find the real ones.

5. Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to contribute to a cause or campaign because it is extremely helpful and anyone can do it. Find an issue that you are passionate about, find a way to make a difference, and spend a little bit of time taking that action. If you're passionate about environmental issues, you can clean up trash. If you are passionate about women's issues, you can volunteer at Planned Parenthood or a women's center. If you want to help a certain campaign, you can canvass your neighborhoods and inform others of that candidate.

There are so many ways to make a little difference, even in today's political climate. If you have a little bit of time, find a way to get involved.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
