It worries me that the new generations will never be aware of the most entertaining vegetables that have ever danced across the television screen. Bob the tomato and Larry the cucumber, the hosts of Veggie Tales, helped children with their problems that most kids face on a regular basis.
Then they would proceed to act out biblical stories in a funnier version with other various vegetables such as carrots, asparagus, pickles, peas, and sometimes even fruits like a blueberry. Then to conclude each 30 minute episode, Bob and Larry would reflect on the story and apply it to the problem that was brought up in the beginning of the episode with a bible verse that encourages the viewers as well. I grew up watching this show and I know so many other people around my age that are not religious that watched this show just as much as I did.
It taught so many lessons over the years besides just the lesson that was revealed at the end of each episode. These life lessons and fun adventures I will remember for a very long time and will hopefully pass it down to my children someday.
1. Any problem that happens in my life I was meant to go through
When I was a child I thought whenever I went through a problem, usually one that everyone goes through as a child, such as bullying, I would think I would have to deal with it forever. I got bullied a lot in elementary school and I just thought I would have to live with it because no matter what I did to change myself I would still get picked on. However, I remembered from Veggie Tales that people bully me to make themselves feel better because their life is not going too well. So, all they need is love and to not bully them back because that will only make it worse. Now, I look back on it and laugh at the fact that I actually cared about what people thought of me. So, all in all Veggie Tales taught me that I went through a lot of bullying to eventually cry and laugh about it, but to also look at people in a different light, which moved me.
2. Be confident and brave
Of course like I said previously I had my own problems when I was a I kid, but I had friends and other people around me that were going through a lot as well. Sometimes there would be issues that I didn't know how to handle, such as when I was in middle school and someone told me they wanted to kill themselves. I had no clue on how to deal with that situation because I realized talking it out would not help. Then I remembered from Veggie Tales that I shouldn't be afraid to get involved when a friend or someone that I know is in some type of danger. If I get involved I could potentially help my friend from doing something that would harm them. I told my mom and eventually she got some type of help, which was great. At first, she didn't want me to, but I'm glad I did in the end.
3. Do not run away from your problems
Many problems can look scary and we will want to run away from them because we think we can't handle them. But, one of the episodes of Veggie Tales was about the boogie man and although I was never really afraid of monsters it still taught to face my problems head on. The song that went with it really helped too, "God is bigger than the boogie man. He's bigger than Godzilla or the monsters on TV. Oh, God is bigger than the boogie man, and he's watching out for you and me." It made me realize that God is watching over me when I am going through any of my problems, which helped me a lot and also I realized that I can't stuff my problems away somewhere because they will always come back.
4. Let your imagination run wild no matter what is happening in your life
I learned that I need to still have fun while I am going through a problem in my life. My mind will get cluttered with the problem and everything surrounding it that I will forget how to have fun. This is more relevant to me more than ever as I am entering into my second year of college. I analyze the problem too much and want to solve it right as it happens, which is good because I don't stuff it, but I also look too much into it that it makes the problem grow into a bigger one. Sometimes I just remember Larry the cucumber taking a break in the show to sing silly songs with Larry. And he would sing about manatees or losing his hairbrush. I need to do more random things when I am facing a problem because it will help me relieve stress.
5. What effect will this solution have on my life?
At the end of every episode, we got a solution to the problem, which was great. However as I got older I realized that I could apply these lessons to different areas of my life down the road. It fixed my problems when I was a little child, but now I am discovering that these lessons still apply to my everyday life as an almost 20 year old. I never thought a TV show involving talking vegetables would have such a great impact on my life through the lessons it taught me, but it also helped me bond with a lot of my friends because they know the songs and episodes too. So, thank you Veggie Tales for an amazing childhood and the lifelong lessons that will forever keep.
