The holiday season is upon us. The warm Hallmark movies are really getting to us, and we've decided we want to make the world a little brighter around us. But we check our bank account and realize buying nice presents isn't really an option.
So... here are 10 ways to give FREELY this holiday. 11/10 would recommend.
Write your friends/family/significant other a letter.
From funny to heartfelt and everywhere in between, this gift is something your people won't receive from anyone else this holiday season. It's a free, but meaningful way to show someone you care.
Volunteer at a soup kitchen.
Although this sounds like a cliche, check off the list, you can really make it meaningful. It is often humbling to see just how many people are in need and realize our privilege. Also really try to connect with people and listen to their stories, that is often just as, if not more meaningful than the food.
Donate your old clothes.
We all have that pile of clothes sitting in our closet collecting dust. Consider donating it to a family member or someone in need. They have clothing drop-boxes all over.
Make time to talk to those who need a friend.
We must not forget the power in looking someone in the eyes with dignity and listening to their story.
There are so many people who feel lonely this holiday season.
Seek them out, whether it's an old friend you haven't talked to in a while, a homeless person on the street, one of your relatives in jail, or just someone you know is struggling. Step out of your comfort zone. Often time companionship is worth more than any wrapped gift.
Smile!
This one is by far the easiest, but also very significant. A smile cannot only brighten up your own day but also someone else. So I challenge you to smile at your mom, the cute old man at the grocery store, and your neighbor. It's the best way to spread Christmas cheer!
And now, although our bank accounts may be empty, our hearts will be full.
