The library. When these two words are spoken, they generally mean one thing: books. As college students, though, it is a known fact that we don’t actually use the library for it’s main purpose, and that is to read books. With the great power of the Internet, books have been on the back burner for student’s top priority to find the answers they need for their classes.
Nowadays, students use the library as almost a hangout spot. The library is a place for study on the upper floors and a place for play on the lower floors.
Here are five alternative uses to the library:
1. To find motivation.
The library is a magical place where when you enter through the glass sliding doors, you feel an overwhelming sense of determination and need for accomplishment. You spot the guy across the room with his hand on his head and a highlighter to his book as if the material he has his eyes on is the most important piece of information he has ever read. That guy is exactly why you must study because you don’t want to be the odd person out.
2. To find someone in your class who actually knows what they’re doing.
The library is a dreamland for connections. When you see the smart kid in your class studying hard for a test you have the next day, you immediately run over just to “check in” and see “how hard” he’s studying for this test. When he begins to say that he’s been studying for 10 days straight and he thinks the test will be hard, that’s when you begin to panic.
3. To find coffee.
When there are books, there’s a brew. Library and coffee are basically synonyms in the dictionary, and sometimes, you just have to stop by for a little pick me up. No one has ever judged another for simply stopping by the library for a cup of coffee. The coffee shop is basically the only way to live for many college students who spend the majority of their time between the book shelves.
4. To use as a waiting room.
Much like waiting for your doctor to finally come out and embarrassingly yell your name over a crowd of people, the library is not only used for studying, but also waiting around. Have a class but not for another 30 minutes? Use the library! Find a spot and plop yourself down away from the stream of people in front of you so that they don’t see that your computer screen is actually playing Netflix rather than what you should be studying for class.
5. To people watch.
Let’s be honest: we all people watch. When you get sick and tired of studying, you tend to gaze off into the distance and look at the people who pass you by. Sometimes, even watching people walk by you is more entertaining than reading the human anatomy book you have been staring at for three hours straight. Plus, you might just find your favorite cutie walking by if you take a break for a while.
So, maybe every once in awhile, challenge yourself to actually open up a book in the library.
