It's no secret that 2016 was one strange year. Memes took over and the death of a gorilla still has the country mourning. As for fashion, celebrities hit the red carpets in outfits that would've had Joan Rivers screaming. Baggy clothes, furs, and layered outfits came back from the dead and if you weren't wearing chokers, you were judged.
These past 365 days were the 90s on steroids. Which definitely isn't a bad thing! But mix the velvet tops with trendy patches on your jeans and a marble phone case, it becomes overkill.
As the new year is quickly approaching, people will start trying to fix their bad habits and "new year, new me" will be Instagram captions on at least ten posts of people you follow. Hopefully, the dog filter on snapchat will follow that same lead and disappear. (Same with the gold headband filter... you may look better using it but everyone knows what you actually look like).
Following the lead that 2016 so graciously brought us, here we have a few trends to expect in the upcoming year:
1. Elephant Snapchat Filter![]()
Gone are the days of cute dog ears and a tongue sticking out. It's time to be unique and let our noses dangle. I can't guarantee that you'll look adorable in your snap chat stories with this filter, but personality over looks anyway... am I right?
2. Painted Hair
Ombre is a hair style of the past. Instead of the subtle highlights everyone you've ever met currently has (guilty), that will soon transform to multi-colored shades. Express your mood each day by waking up and projecting to the world that you're feeling a little blue.
3. Light-Up Clothes
We've tried the velvet, the fur, and the plastic clothing. The only step that makes the most sense to follow that line up would be light-up clothes. Just accept now that you'll never look at good as Lizzie McGuire did.
4. Bold Patterns
According to Harpers Bazaar, this is actually a trend to look for this upcoming spring. Personally, I'll be sticking to my leggings and sweatshirt look. But if you're really interested, go all out. Mix and match orange stripes with black and white boxed pants. You'll have fashion followers in no time.
5. Beef Jerky
If you're looking to get an artsy picture of your morning toast and coffee, don't even think about putting avocado slices on top. Though it was probably the most delicious trend thus far, you'll be so 2016. Beef jerky gives your meals a nice rustic look and has tons of flavor you've been missing.
We may have dropped the ball this past year on looking cool, but next year that all changes. New year, new you.
