I am the most talented procrastinator you will ever meet. It's one of my most polished talents. However, I'm sure my procrastinating peers are searching for answers to their problem of waiting until an hour before the class to type a five-page paper. Here's a list of the best tips I could think of for kicking procrastination in the butt:
1. Turn off your phone
I know it sounds hard and I love Twitter as much as the next person, but it's the easiest way to reduce your distractions. Turn it off, throw it in the corner of your room, and get to work!
2. If you're reading, get comfy.
My favorite place to do my longer readings is in my bed with a fuzzy blanket!
3. But don't get too comfy...
For any assignment that requires lengthy writing, typing, or answering questions, get to your desk. It's easy to get a hand cramp or get frustrated with pills getting the way. Frustration always leads to procrastination. Stay out of bed and skip this step altogether
4. Eat BEFORE you study or tackle tasks/assignments.
The single most distracting thing for me when I'm trying to be productive is hunger. I'm one of those people who cannot stop eating when they start. At first, it's some pretzels, then its water, because pretzels are so salty; then I see the fruit in the fridge and the next thing I know I'm sipping on a smoothie starring at the single sentence I managed to produce before getting distracted.
5. Surround yourself with people who don't procrastinate.
This is the craziest phenomenon I swear. My roommate is the most productive person I have ever met. As soon as she gets an assignment she sits down to tackle it. She even gets ahead on readings and questions on the syllabus. You can't help, but feel motivated (and a little bit guilty) when you're the only one not doing anything!
