There are a lot of things you learn growing up, but there is no textbook for dating a nerdy man in your early twenties. What do I mean by "nerdy"? Not the guy that screams into his headset while playing his PlayStation 4.
I am talking about the guy that wears weird symbols on his shirt that not even you understand. The guy that keeps dice and a deck box in the glovebox of his car instead of his insurance papers or napkins. I have adjusted to many of these things and I know that some things are hard to deal with. So, ladies and gents, I am here to give you hope! Here are 5 tips I think you should know when dating a nerdy man:
1. Committing to a nerdier lifestyle.
When you start dating your geeky guy, you start dating his hobbies as well. This means being supportive, interested and emerged into all things nerdy. Prepare yourself by being open-minded and ready to get your hands dirty (and nerdy).
2. Learn the language.
Hearing your man scream "We tech those!" or "Use your up-tilt!" is no cause for panic. Get familiar with common phrases of any of your nerdy man's hobbies. It will help you in later conversations or when hearing him converse with friends.
3. Do not discourage the money he spends on his nerdy hobbies.
This one took me a while to master, so be patient. For some reason, nerdy hobbies cost quite a bit more money than you would think. Buying different cards, new controllers, card sleeves and guide books is essential. It might feel like unnecessary spending to you, but it is crucial to his hobbies.
4. Let him teach you about his hobbies.
This might seem dreadful at first, but you both will appreciate it in the end. Learning how to play his favorite trading card game, what combos characters on Smash can do and when he plays Dungeons and Dragons with his friends will benefit you throughout your relationship. It also makes holiday purchases much easier!
5. Understand that he has nerdy friends.
Your nerdy man will have friends that are also nerdy men or women that he participates in these hobbies with, so do not freak out when he is playing Dungeons and Dragons and is not texting back much. He is enjoying his hobby and time with his friends, which is totally OK! When you start submerging yourself into his nerdy world, you will be his partner-in-nerd and hopefully become part of these groups too!
Don't dump your geeky guy and give him a chance to get to turn three. Get geeky!
