Parents are the best. They brought us up into the world, provided shelter, food, and everything else that ensures our survival. But, sometimes, they can be a pain in the ass. There are some things they may say to you that makes you roll your eyes in frustration, or even convince you that you would be better off without them. But, don't fret. They do that because they love you and want to protect you from the world.
1. "Get up, you lazy bum. It's time to do the chores now."
In no way does this statement reflect on who you are. You may be the most active student in school, and yet, your parents cannot see that. All they see is someone who stays up all night binge watching shows on Netflix and then hanging around on the couch the next day. Yes, they may be calling you lazy, but they don't mean that. All they want you to do is to realize that life cannot be wasted and that doing chores can effectively help them and help you, too.
2. "Let me know where you are at all times."
I must admit, this one gets annoying and old REAL FAST. Asking me every single minute, every single hour of a day where I am is just plain frustrating. I'm just in the bathroom, Mom. I'm right around the corner of the driveway, Dad. I'm just with a friend. Blah blah blah. Half of the time when they ask you where you are, most of the time, you're safe. But when they stop asking, you find yourself at the weirdest places.
3. "Focus on your studies. It's the only thing that will help you in the future."
The world has been evolving as more generations come onto the surface of the earth. It used to be that academics was the only path to reach success, but so many people have been finding themselves through other career paths like culinary work, art, music, poetry, and journalism. Of course, I understand, that back in your day, it was all about work, work, and more work. But, I live in a different time now. We do things a bit differently.
4. "Don't hang with the wrong crowd."
Friends are everything, especially for your parents. Even though they have never met your friends before, they can recognize the "wrong" person from a mile away. In fact, they believe they have the right to tell you who to hang out with because they want you to stay true to yourself. This one, I might have to say, is important to do. Parents have plenty of experience with all types of people, and listening to them may teach you something.
5. "I love you, but that doesn't mean you take me for granted."
And most of all, be thankful for your parents. I mean, they were the ones that carried you and took care of you while sacrificing things for themselves. They were the ones who watched you grow up, and the least you can do is return the favor and listen to them. Even though their words can be very hurtful, just know that they want some gratitude from time to time. Show them that by listening to them and being safe. But most importantly, be happy.
