5 Things You Wish You Knew In High School

Or at least could have seen coming.

5 Things You Wish You Knew In High School
Kathy Cartwright

The day you graduated from high school was the most bitter sweet event that you may or may not have ever experienced— except maybe the day you got your driver's license. We never saw it coming when our parents ruined that faithful moment when they asked, "Now can you run by the grocery store and pick up some groceries?"

But moving on is never easy, in anything that the phrase encompasses. But fortunately time is the ultimate healer and seer. The phrase "Hindsight is 20/20," has never been more true. So for all you people out there with less than 20/20 vision, here's a few things I wished I knew back in the good ole days.

1. The food doesn't get better in college.

Cherish the little time you have with your sack lunch. Before long you'll be too brooke to even get the 3 dollar burrito from the local Mexican restaurant and cafeteria food is the only thing between you and starvation.

2. Eight to three school days aren't so bad.

Believe me free time is not your friend; it is personally responsible for my bad grades, unhealthy eating habits, and honestly my late assignments. The more free time I have, the less stuff I get done. Don't always wish away your productiveness, because in college how productive you are is based on how well you handle your free time.

3. Dressing cute was not as essential as we thought.

Dressing up everyday to class is kind of like wearing a prom dress to a cocktail party— out of place and unnecessary. Sure sometimes is good to reach into your closet and grab that nice shirt with the perfect shoes to match, but it's also important to know that you shouldn't just rely on your outfits every day for your confidence and attitude toward life. Maybe your striking personality needs a little room to work its magic too.

4. Grades are good, memories are better.

I'm not saying that grades and studying and learning and everything else in the world that has to do with school is not essential, but maybe its not as important as they are lifted up to be. Definitely strive for those straight A's, but maybe next time your friends ask you to go to a movie, try saying yes and schedule around your time for studying. You can only go through high school once, so don't just have awesome studying techniques to tell your kids.

5. Don't Blink!

High school will be some of the saddest and happiest times in your life. It's the craziest love/hate relationship you will ever have; the biggest breakup you'll never get over. It's an addiction that life forces you to quit and move on from and we just have to accept it. Don't wish it away, because you'll miss it more than you know.

The funny thing about high school is that it relates too much to everything in life, yet there is no other experience like it. High school just happens and you hope to God that you come out sane enough to be able to get into a good college.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
