No I don't want to be a park ranger.

5 Things You Should Never Say To A Natural Resource Management Major
The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resources

I came into Natural Resource Management my sophomore year of college. I absolutely love my major and everything I do in it. Over the years, I have heard many different things from my non-natural resource management friends that are not true about NRM. Just to clear things up, here is what not to say to us.

1. Natural Resource Management? That sounds really easy.

Ha ha ha, I wish this statement was even a little bit true. Even though our labs consist of being in the fresh mountain air, we still have to take pretty hard classes that consist of a lot of biology, chemistry, and math. Not to mention all of the lab reports that we write every week that also require countless amounts of research and scholarly or peer-reviewed articles. So don't think we are just another major that gets to play outside.

2. Oh so you hate it when people cut down trees.

Yes, and no. As a natural resource management major my concentration is in forestry. My job is learning how to manage a forest system. Sometimes that means cutting or even burning trees. Sometimes people cut or burn too much and it destroys a forest system and that is what I do not like.

3. You want to be a park ranger right?

Under my profession I could indeed be a park ranger but not all of us want to be that. Some of us go on to be Ecologists, Botanists, and even Naturalists. In NRM we have a pretty wide range of opportunities waiting for us. Whether its in a National Park or with a timber company.

4. There is no jobs and no money in NRM.

Unlike what people think and as what I have said before there is a wide range of jobs for NRM majors, you just have to find what you like. A for the no money part. Why would I want to spend the rest of my life in a job that I am no where near interested in if it means more money? Believe it or not I am not in NRM to make a lot of money, I am in it because its my passion and I love everything about it. I want to wake up everyday excited to go to work.

5. Oh your in a science major, you must be super smart and have a 4.0.

Yes there are really smart people in my major, but I believe there are smart people in every major. You don't have to be a scientist or have a 4.0 to be smart.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
