My little sister and I have always been really close. Growing up, we had no choice but to be best friends because we were together basically all the time. We fought, of course, but at the end of the day, we always knew that we could count on each other. I’ve now grown up and gone off to college, but throughout the year, there are short periods of time when I’m able to go home. During the time I spend at home, I’ve begun to realize differences and changes in her.
1. She’s cooler than I ever was.
As much as I hate to admit it, my little sister is just a way cooler, prettier, smarter version of me at that age, and I have the pleasure of getting to watch her outshine me in everything I’ve ever done.2. She passed me up in size.
Do you know how embarrassing it is when people actually think that you’re the younger sister when you’re actually three years older? Well, I’ve been dealing with that for about four years now ever since my little sister decided to sprout up and now towers over me by three inches.
3. My parents aren't as strict with her.
She doesn't give me the credit I deserve for going first and taking the stricter end of things. My sister has a lot more privileges than I did when I was her age (like staying out later with her friends), and I remind my parents of that every chance I get.
4. She can actually stand her ground when we fight.
My sister used to run off and cry to our parents when I would make even the tiniest jab at her. But nowadays, she actually makes good and kind of funny comebacks with more sass of her own. I like to think she owes me for toughening her up a bit.
5. She’ll always be my best friend.
Whether it's playing school and forcing her to be the student when we were growing up, or hour-long FaceTime calls when I’m away at college, she’ll always be my best friend, my go-to, and the one who knows me better than I know myself.
So, like it or not, your little sister is the one who has been there throughout a lot of your life, the one that ruined your chance of being an only child, and the best partner you could ever ask to have by your side. She may be getting older and making her own path, but to me, she’ll always just be the little one behind me, following every move I make.
