5 Things You'll Learn Real Quick in College

Everything isn't what it seems.

5 Things You'll Learn Real Quick in College
Jay Connor

When I got to college, I thought I knew it all. I thought I was prepared and all set to move on to the next chapter in my life. Since being here, I have learned a shit ton of things. Here are my top five.

1. Due Dates

In high school, due dates weren't really a real thing, ya know? Like if you had a due date, you could get away with turning your work in a few days late. Well in college, you can't do that. If it's late, you get a straight up ZERO, (unless you have a good professor that doesn't really care about due dates, or if you have a good excuse).

2. Floormates

Your floormates will literally become your family. You will go everywhere with them and maybe even shit with them. Trust me, you will seriously get that close with the people on the floor. That doesn't mean you will necessarily hang out with everyone on the floor, but there will be that group that you just click with and go everywhere with them. These floormates will be your friends for life!

3. Sleep

Sleep. This is a word I barely know anymore. In college, sleep is so overrated. On average, you'll probably get about 2-4 hours of sleep at night. The overwhelming pile of homework will take away your sleep. Also, another reason you won't sleep because in college, there are always dance parties in the common area and there is that group of people down the hall that are night owls and will want to hang out with you. So enjoy your sleep while you can, because in college, it's pretty much nonexistent.

4. Homework

I mentioned that overwhelming pile of homework. Yes, it is true. Your professors will drown you in homework. Not to be that asshole of a professor, but to make you learn some shit. You'll end up having a five page essay, an eight page essay, and a six page essay all due the same day. It's okay, like I said before, sleep in nonexistent in college. So, you'll be up all night finishing that pile of homework. You'll learn real quick how to manage your time. If not then, you're pretty much screwed.

5. The Dining Hall

When people told me that college food was good and wasn't like high school food, I believed them. When I came to college, I realized they were wrong. It's not as bad as high school food, but it doesn't live up to the expectations. They usually have the same choices every day so it gets kind of old after a while. Some days they will have good food, but that's like once every two weeks. I mean they have pizza every day; you can't go wrong with that. They also have ice cream. My favorite thing is when they have stir fry which is like every three weeks, so I get stuck with salad, pasta, and ice cream. They can't fuck up ice cream, so have at it and eat a tub.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
