5 Things You Know to be True if Your Sister is 12 Years Older Than You

It may seem weird to anyone not in the situation, but you know you wouldn't change anything.

There are many things you know to be true if your sibling and you have a significant age gap. I am fortunate to have a sister 12 years older than me. I know that I for sure learned many things a lot younger than I should have, but I also remember how cool it was hanging out with my older sister and her friends. Here are six things you know to be true if you and your sister have a large age difference.

1. You got your own personal chauffeur.

Your sister was always there for you whether you needed a ride to dance class, school, or anything else. You could always count on her. She may not have wanted to always be driving you around, but your parents made her. Plus, it looked really cool to be riding in a car with a high schooler driving.

2. The hand-me-downs were amazing!

One great thing about your sister being older is that you got all of her old clothes. We’re talking clothes from Gap, Macy’s, JC Penny, anywhere. Plus, she had great style! She still does! I often find myself going through her clothes and “going shopping” whenever I visit (sorry, Brandi!).

3. People always thought she was your mom.

It may have been a bad thing for her, but you definitely knew how to use it to your advantage. You were able to see all of the “R” rated movies (without Mom and Dad knowing), you were always able to have her sign your permission slip forms, and she could pick you up from school without any questions asked!

4. You have someone to go to when you need advice and it’s too embarrassing to talk to your parents.

First boyfriend? First period? Need someone to complain to about Mom and Dad? Go to your sister! She’s been through it all and then some. She knows what she’s talking about and she knows how to handle Mom and Dad. She’s been there and done that. So why not talk to someone who will give you real answers?

5. She’ll tell you like it is.

Growing up, you’re going to make a lot of stupid choices. Without a doubt, your sister will be there to tell you what mistakes you’re making. Sure, her ways of letting you know may not be… conventional, but she makes sure that her words get stuck in your head. And this is why you believe that she was the inventor of tough love.

6. She’ll always have your back.

If someone is picking on her little sister, all hell is about to break loose. The only person allowed to poke fun at her sister is her. This is a great feeling to have; knowing that no matter what you have someone in your corner backing you up. You know you’ll always have her because let's face it, you’re blood. And you’re kind of stuck together forever.

Even though I’m almost 20 and you’re almost 32, I love how close we have become. You may live over six hours away from me and be busy with your own life (marriage and kids can be exhausting), but I’ll always consider you one of my best friends. Having a sister 12 years older may seem weird to anyone who isn’t in the situation, but I personally wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
