5 Things You Are Sick of Hearing If You Are An English Major
Jstor Daily

English, in my experience, is a major that is constantly looked down upon, or stigmatized. As an English Writing Major, I have faced this every day since I decided I wanted to major in English in my senior year of high school. If you're an English Major as well, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.

Here are five things that every English Major is sick and tired of hearing:

1. "Oh, so you're going to be a teacher?"

Well, certainly you can be, and there's nothing wrong with that, but there are also multiple other career choices you can go into such as journalism, publishing, etc. Teaching is not the only job choice available for English Majors.

2. "You do know that you won't make a lot of money right?"

I know that it won't be likely that I would make a lot of money, and honestly that was never my goal in the first place. My goal is to be happy for the rest of my life, doing what I love. Money should not be the only motivation for picking your major.

3."You should pick a different major."

You don't see me deciding your major for you or judging yours, give me the same decency.

4. "You like reading and writing? What? That's so weird!"

Everyone has their niche, mine just happens to be a love for writing and interpreting texts. Some people have a more analytical mind, mine is a tad more creative and fabulous.

5. "What would you do with an English Degree anyways?"

Okay. Cool. So now I get to educate you.

I once heard my major be called "The Little Black Dress Of Degrees." Although it may seem like there are a limited amount of choices to what you can do, it is actually the opposite. In fact, some companies look for English Majors in particular due to the fact that English Majors are very articulate and tend to have very useful skills such as communication, critical thinking, writing, and research. English Majors also tend to have very good empathy, and many companies are starting to recognize it's importance in hiring people according to their ability to understand others. If you think what I'm saying is absolute bologna, feel free to check out the following article by Bruna Martinuzzi, President and Founder of Clarion Enterprises Ltd. She explains why she tends to hire English Majors and why they're the hot new hire.

All in all, English Majors are not completely worthless like some believe they are, and most English Majors are sick and tired of being treated this way. We are tired of the constant assumptions and low key very insulting questions of our major. So without a doubt, we are sick and tired of hearing all of these things, and hopefully, this will bring light to the value of English Majors, and make others question themselves before they decide to question us.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
