In the coming weeks at universities all across the country college seniors will be throwing up their hats and moving on into the 'real world'. As I think about the fact that I will be graduating college, I remember feeling the same sense of impending... change, four years ago.
Graduating High School is one of the best things that ever happened to me at the time. Toxic friendships and bad memories -- I could leave them all behind!
College means new people, new school, new home, and new you.
So to the boy or girl who is looking for that perfect college experience, here's a few thing's I wish someone had told me when I started college...
1. You are going to miss your home.
Whether you're crazy homesick and going home every weekend or just miss the familiar places/faces. Moving to a new place is exciting and scary -- you may feel differently every day. It's going to be an adjustment and you will probably get lost on or off campus at least once; don't worry in a few years it'll be hilarious! Remember, no matter what anyone tells you, it's okay to go home!
2. Your friends from home are going to be just as busy as you are, and that's okay!
3. Sometimes you'll question your choice of school and major.
At 3am when you're cramming for a test you'll be thinking 'Do I even want to do this?!'. That's normal and completely warranted! When you choose a major in the sciences, you weren't planning on taking World Literature II... Always remember EVERY college has its drawbacks. You chose this school and major for a reason, keep that in mind! (and always have a late night snack stash!)
4. Go out on the town!
This doesn't mean the party on the fourth floor or at the baseball team's house. It means go out into the town/city you now live in and explore! Find the good places to eat, drink, and relax! A local park, mall, or cute downtown shopping area! Whether on or off campus -- get involved. Becoming familiar with a new place can help you feel more at home!
5. You will meet some of the most amazing friends you'll ever have.
And that.. is the best part.
So seniors, get ready. It's a wild ride these next four years. From those of us who's ride is coming to an end let me just say -- let go, and hold on tight!
