What Nobody Told You About College

5 Things You Wish You Knew Before Moving Into College

You did it! You finally graduated high school. Now, you are super excited to begin your work towards your career. You going to go to college! You only have a few ideas of what it will be like from movies or if your siblings are older than you.

Here're five things I wish I knew before moving into college.

1. College Is Almost Exactly Like High School

Aside from sleeping on campus, it's about the same. People still love to create drama. People will continue to cheat like they did in high school. People still act like they run the school, even though everyone there completed the requirements to attend.

2. Making Friends Is Stressful

You don't want to be the one person sitting alone at meals. You don't want to be that awkward person in class who never says a word. Making friends is definitely tough. It's super important that you be open and try new things. Make sure the people you befriend are ones you are going to want to be friends with the next four years.

3. That Teacher In High School That Tried Preparing You For College, Knew Nothing.

They told you the courses would be harder. They told you that you HAD to turn your assignments in on time. They told you that college professors won't tolerate any high school nonsense. What the real nonsense is that high school teachers are trying to scare you. As long as you have common sense and attempt to work toward your goals and attempt the assignments, you will be fine. College professors WANT you to succeed.

4. Let Go

If you are anything like me, you hate where you came from. You couldn't wait to get away from all the people in high school. Something I realized in the first couple of weeks it to let go. Those people do NOT matter at all anymore. You don't have to see them every day anymore. Just let go. Let go of all the memories and focus on the here and now. You can make it, you little fighter.

5. READ!

You know how in high school, your teacher would say to read chapters 1 and 2 and you usually just looked up what the book was about online? You actually just need to force yourself to read the book. You will attain so much more information and you will be successful in your classes.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
