We've all been there. We've had those days where we spend the whole day wishing it would just be over already and we could just crawl in bed and sleep for a very long time. The worst is when you go through a bad week or a bad season and seem to have so many bad days that you just can't muster enough energy to pull yourself out of this funk you have gotten into. You feel like people don't understand and that you would come across as someone who complains a lot or someone who is miserable and that only pulls you down deeper. I have been there. Multiple times. While it's not the easiest thing to make yourself feel better about the day, there are a few things to try to keep in mind.
1. Everyone has bad days.
That sounds like such a cliche, but it is true. There is no one on the entire planet who can say that every part of every day is perfect. If they can, they are lying to you. Sure, there are some people who can turn things into a positive much quicker than others, but even they still have their moments where they have to try especially hard to be positive. So, when you feel like everyone else around you is having a good day and you can't understand why in the world you had to have a bad day, just remember, soon it will be someone else's turn and you're perfect day could be right around the corner.
2. There is no set way to respond.
Everyone reacts differently. Why sometimes an individual has multiple different ways they react just depending on the situation. So if you need to scream into a pillow, cry (whether that be a normal cry or the ugliest cry anyone has ever seen), eat a whole box of chocolates, watch an entire episode of Grey's Anatomy on Netflix, or respond in any other way that might seem absurd, just do it. Sometimes the release of emotions you are feeling is exactly what you need to move past your bad day. Let yourself feel how you're feeling so that you can get past this bad day and change your outlook for the days to come!
3. Talking it out will help.
If you keep all of your feelings inside, it is only going to build up into an even worse day. Tell someone how you are feeling. That someone could be a friend, a roommate, a parent, your favorite stuffed animal, your journal, God, or your pet. Letting it out and telling someone exactly how you feel allows you to accept that you are having a bad day and it also helps take all of those negative feelings outside of you instead of harboring them in your own head. It's a way to let go of things and just be done with them.
4. Focusing on something else could change your perspective.
While it is probably not the best idea to just act like nothing is wrong or to push your feelings down deeper, it is a good idea to do something that will get you out of your head and give you a moment or two to smile or feel a little bit better. Maybe this means you take a break and go out to eat with friends, or watch an episode of your favorite tv show, or watch funny videos on youtube, or maybe even take a nap. This will allow you to give yourself a little break and could change your mindset for the rest of the day.
5. Tomorrow will be better.
I know. I know. When you are having a bad day, this statement seems pointless. But try to think of each day as a new opportunity to make that day better than the last. Also, if today was really bad, it can't get much worse tomorrow. Set yourself up for a better day. The mind is a crazy thing. If you start your day out by telling yourself that today will be a good day and then you make positive mindset decisions, the things that are thrown your way will seem so minor. You have the power to have a great day. Make it so.
