5 Things The Corps Of Cadets Has Taught Me

Ah, the Boar's Head Brigade, the most high speed, high drag ROTC program, producing the finest Butter Bar Lieutenants the U.S. Army has ever seen. For better or worse, we are all here together running AGRs in freezing temperature and cleaning halls to make us better future leaders in either the military or private sector. Over the years we have all endured many challenges and harsh lessons that we had to deal with, using all the knowledge we obtained through MILS 1000. I feel as all the repetitive Monday labs and random room inspections have prepared me for the real Army because the Corps is exactly like the real Army. I mean, we are all basically Rangers after LDP anyway. Nonetheless I got to say I do not regret becoming a cadet most of the time because of the cohesion and family that I have obtained here when we were embracing the suck together.

1. Cadets are dumb as rocks

  • Currently on the chopping block on issues in our government is how much money the government wastes on dumb things. Unfortunately, wasting is very prominent in the Corps, with dumb taskings stealing our time from activities that are actually beneficial to our futures [like, maybe, academics (“Academics First HOOAH!” (Col. Palmer)], but NAW let's go stand outside and direct traffic cause that makes us better leaders. It seems like the Corps spends more on recruitment and visual assets than actual training or improvement on quality of life for cadets. With all the needless spending in the Corps of Cadets, I am surprised that the government isn't in debt. Oh, wait.

    2. Everyone is fighting their own battles

With society and everyone just literally being horrible pieces of dung, a lot of cadets have to deal a lot more than most other students. With all the turmoil that strikes our society today, cadets have another strain on top of their lives. Between the stress of LDP, leadership boards, contracts and OML standings normal life issues such as relationships and family seem to be magnified. Many of us have to deal with Broken Arrow situations during our time here and it might seem like an airstrike package is coming down on us. So just remember to treat everyone well because they got stuff to deal with just like you do.

    4. Unit cohesion

Like family, you do not get to choose who is going to be part of your FROG class. Something that I have been blessed with a pretty amazing FROG class and while we have separated to go to bigger and better positions within the Corps many of us will never forget the times we have spent together from funny TAPS to lighting a campfire in the shower. Something that many other college students do not have is the sense of pride and family that comes from getting our balls smoked off because someone forgot their canteen or freezing to death on the security line together.

    5. Everyone think they're hot shit

With all the operators running around with their tactical hat with patches and grunt style shirts I can only assume every cadet is low key a member of Delta Force. We all hear that one guy in chow talking about how high speed he is, but all I see a walking potato that passes out on a Brigade run. Unfortunately, it seems like the Corps of Cadets attracts all the weird kids that feel like they have to prove something to the world and overcompensate. Thankfully, not every cadet is like that, but it's always that one guy that ruins its for everyone.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
