Being one of the most non-athletic people on this planet, joining a sports team in high school was never really an option for me. So naturally, I joined show choir. Though many students were simply in there for the arts credit my school required, I fell in love with it. Show choir not only gave me a creative outlet in my day, but it also taught me many lessons, not just in choir, but in life!
1. Fake it till you make it.
Sometimes you don't know whats going on, whether that be in life or on stage. As a performer, I was always told to never let your mistakes show. Forgot a dance step? No problem...the only people really watching you are your parents anyways! In life, the only people really watching your every move are your parents...it's okay to miss a step now and then.
2. Walk with a purpose.
On stage, your purpose for movement is pretty straight forward...move from point A to point B, hopefully without tripping! In life, whatever you do, do it with a purpose. Wandering aimlessly through life will get you no where and will, in the end, leave you feeling empty and useless. You're where you are for a reason; you wake up every morning for a reason...so walk with a purpose. Hold your head high and, back to number one: Fake it till you make it.
3. Whatever you do, keep smiling.
Audrey Hepburn once said one of the truest statements ever uttered in human existence: "Happy girls are the prettiest girls." On stage, whether or not you are the best singer or dancer, the most important part of a performance is the face of the performers. I'm a firm believer in smiling even when everything seems to be going wrong. Smiling can not only make you look better and feel better, but can also bring a smile to someone else's face. After all, smiling is contagious!
4. You have to look ridiculous sometimes
If you have ever watched a show choir perform,it's very obvious that they look ridiculous 98% of the time...real show choir isn't Glee! Honestly, life is about looking ridiculous now and then. Being yourself is the best you can do in life and sometimes being yourself means you're going to look ridiculous...'cause where's the fun in blending in with the crowd?
5. Anyone can sparkle!
No where can you find such a mixture of people as you can in show choir. Everyone's welcome in show choir - athlete, geek, drama queen, etc. When you all get on that stage, you all look the same and you have to work together to put on a great show. Show choir is known for their very sparkly apparel. When you step on that stage, in whatever sparkle-covered dress your director has placed you in, you leave behind the conceptions and stereotypes, and you get on stage and you sparkle. Show choir showed me that, even if you may not be the most "sparkly" person in your everyday life, anyone can sparkle!
