April has arrived! However, with spring in the air, the rainy season approaches as well. As much as I like that, “April showers bring May flowers,” the rain opts out many fun, spring-like activities. Sadly, it's not likely that most of us can go drop a bunch of money on the nearest mall or shopping excursion. While the rain works at washing away all of the nasty pollen, here are a few ideas on how to occupy your time without breaking the bank.
1. Netflix binge time.
Hopefully, you or a friend of yours has acquired this wonderful entertainment. I don’t necessarily mean watching the same shows you’ve grown to love. Browse the Netflix library and see what you come up with. If you find something worth watching through all 19 seasons, no shame. If it’s absolutely terrible, mark it down as that one show you and your friends can all make fun of in certain circumstances then move to the next show. This category is how I was convinced to watch the "Human Centipede" series --which I don’t recommend for weak stomachs.
2. Host a game tournament.
If you or someone you know owns some type of console, this would be lots of fun. Once or twice, my friends and I have gone down to the game room in the Suites with a Wii and played Just Dance. There is lots of room to play and lots of laughs for sure. But really: hook it up, invite some people and try not to get too feisty when playing Super Smash Brothers. I promise no one is judging.
3. Explore your dorm’s lounge area.
The dorms at UNG (at least I know for sure that Donovan and the Suites do) have at least a ping-pong and a billiards table. It's a stormy day, so give it a shot. What do you have to lose? If your building has something cooler or you want to try and make a game combining two or more of those activities, more power to you. Try to be the master of the trick-shot.
4. DIY time!
This is probably my favorite category for rainy days. What can be more fun than a few arts and crafts? Pinterest has some great ideas for cheap diy projects. One of my personal favorites is origami because it only requires a sheet of paper to make some super-cool figurines. One of my favorite YouTubers for this kind of thing has some great tutorials. Other personal favorites include trying out different gift ideas for a birthday coming up or making some snazzy sharpie mugs.
5. Read, write, draw, etc.
If reading doesn’t interest you, write or draw. If writing doesn’t satisfy you, read or draw. You get the gist of it. Rainy days are a good time to try to write after overcoming that dreaded writer’s block two weeks ago, or trying to finish that drawing that you couldn’t fathom to continue because you weren’t inspired. Turn on some music and try to immerse yourself so time will fly by.
Bonus: homework and study time!
Well, you’ve got the time. Might as well crack down on that essay that you’ve been avoiding for three weeks (that’s due on Friday). That way when the sun comes out, you can go play on the campus field without with all others who are just as eager for the sunshine.
