When I was a sophomore in high school I got the privilege of shadowing a Speech-Language Pathologist, and I discovered what I still believe to be my calling. Little did I know how much the plan I had originally created would change! Whether you want to be an SLP, teacher or doctor, these can apply to any major

1) Weigh your options carefully.

As in most fields of study, you have multiple options when deciding to become an SLP. I started out dead set on working in a school with children when I started, but my eyes were opened to a whole new world and now I don’t know what I want to do! Don’t put your blinders on and miss out on all your field has to offer. Keep an open mind.

2) You will question whether you can actually do this.

Entering into adulthood is scary, plain and simple. When you start getting into your major’s courses, you’ll get that is-this-real-life feeling and you will question yourself. When you get a bad grade you will think, “can I really do this?” You will look at other students and wonder if you can keep up. The answer to this is simple. Yes you can! No path you take is going to be easy, but it will be so worth it. Push yourself.

3) There will be things you don’t like.

In all situations, you put yourself in there is at least one aspect you don’t like. I don’t like the idea of telling someone they have to put a disgusting thickener into all their drinks, but I can do it. When faced with this dilemma you have to ask yourself whether the good outweighs the bad, and if you can push through the bad and still feel the good. Find that good!

4) You will fall in love with your future.

When I look ahead I get so excited! I am going to have the career I have always dreamed of and I find myself wishing I could skip ahead to that moment. But don’t do that. There is a reason you are in school. If not for absorbing all the information you can in order to be successful, then it is to make memories that will last you a lifetime. Don’t wish all of that away to fast-forward. Take it all in and absorb all that you can! Take it slow.

You will realize this is exactly where you are meant to be.

“It’s a helluva start, being able to recognize what makes you happy” –Lucille Ball. There has not been a moment since I have started college where I have regretted my decision to pursue this future. When I see the future I get so happy! I know I will be a great SLP. I am excited to keep learning more. Don’t stop until you find the major that feels right in your heart. Find your place.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
