5 Things I Learned Since Joining Greek Life

I never thought I would be one to join a sorority, but I'm glad I did.

5 Things I Learned Since Joining Greek Life

If you would have asked me at the beginning of my senior year of high school if I could see myself in a sorority, I would have laughed at you and said no definitely not. Well, I have a habit of eating my words because just over a month ago I started college and I also joined a Sorority, and I can say it has been one of the best choices I have ever made. Here are five things I have learned in the small time I have been apart of Greek Life.

1. Support

You get an amazing support system whether you are having roommate problems, boyfriend/girlfriend problems, homesickness, or family issues. Your Greek Life family is there for you in a heartbeat. They want what’s best for you and if they can do anything to help you they will.

2. Every day can be a photo shoot

It does not matter if it's game day, you're going to an apple orchid, you are twinning with your bestie, you need a new photo to post on Instagram, or it’s just a random Tuesday and you look cute. Odds are in your favor that one of your sisters will be willing to either take a picture of you or be in it with you.

3. Academic assistance

Struggling in a class? No problem! There is a very likely chance that someone has taken the class you are currently struggling in and would be very willing to help you study. Not only that but they will also have incredible knowledge of the different campus resources for you to use.

4. In the classroom

Coming from a small town, it was a bit overwhelming to find out that some of my lecture classes would have more people in them than there were people in my PK-12 High School. So it was very nice to find out that a lot of the girls in my sorority are also taking similar classes that I was. In all of my classes, there is at least one person I know from my sorority.

5. Campus involvement

You get super involved on campus like right away. There is always something for you do with you chapter house from fundraising to community service projects. Not to mention events like Homecoming week where you are challenged to go and help in the community from helping on the homecoming committee to donating blood at blood drives, and being apart of the event staff for prep rally and concerts that go on that week.

Believing that Greek Life is just like it is in the movies is like saying High School Musical if what High School was really like. I have just begun to scratch the surface of what it’s like to be apart of a Sorority but I will tell you that it was nothing like I ever expected and everything I could imagine and more. I would never have imagined I would have 150+ sisters now I don’t think I could ever live without them.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
