5 Things I Wish I Knew As A Freshman At A Small School

Beginning college as a freshman can be incredibly stressful, there's no doubt about that. You're basically leaving everything behind and starting a new life. It's easy to feel a little lost at first, and that's normal! Now that I'm a junior and two years into this whole experience, there're a few things I wish I had known when I was in your shoes.

1. Decorate a bedroom that you can feel comfortable in.

You don't have to buy the nicest bedding or a 50" flat screen TV; just make an atmosphere you look forward to coming home to. Personalize your room! Hang up posters of your favorite bands or sports teams, and bring pictures of your family and friends.

2. Leave your door open.

The people living on your floor the first year may become some of your closest friends. Try to leave your door propped open whenever you can. It invites you to get to know your floormates, and maybe your potential best friends.

3. You don't have to do what everyone else is doing.

If partying isn't your thing, don't feel pressured to go out all the time. There's always going to be people who go out most nights of the week, and that's fine. But know that there are many other ways to get involved around campus.

4. Make friends in your classes, especially those in your major.

I didn't realize this at the time, but to this day, I still work with people who were in my Intro to Media class years ago. Get to know each other! Not only will you be able to talk about that group project you've been dreading, but you'll find common interests with one another. I mean, you are working toward the same degree on your diplomas.

5. Branch out and try to avoid falling into a clique.

You're going to be around these people for four years of your life; you're on a journey together. Try to make the most of it! You'll meet all kinds of people, good and bad. But make it a point to get to know everyone. Always smile and say hi to friends or acquaintances in passing. Kindness does go a long way, especially when making new friendships. You'll be happier in the long run!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
