5 Things I'm Scared Of

What are your fears?

5 Things I'm Scared Of
Jessica Keoshian

There are not too many things in life that I am afraid of, but these are the top 5 things that scare me, in no particular order. Truthfully, all of these can be equally scary.

1. Spiders

Spiders are the devil of all bugs. I am not sure why most people fear them so much, but I know why I fear them. First of all, they have too many legs. With the amount of legs that they have, they should be faster than any other animal. I mean, some of the fastest animals have four legs, so I know that any more than that is just unnecessary. They might not be there for speed; maybe all of those legs are for the scare factor. But in all honesty, whatever the reason, they are terrifying. People can argue that they are part of our ecosystem and do only good for nature, but that does not justify their horror movie qualities.

2. Snakes

Snakes are documented from the beginning of time as being associated with everything evil. In many religions and even cultures they represent one of the simplest forms of evil and distrust in nature. So obviously this is why they appear scary. But what I don’t understand is how something can live completely WITHOUT legs. It is a problem to have too many legs, but what is worse is not having any at all. That is true sorcery if I have ever seen any.

3. Loneliness

Many people are scared of the dark, and I see loneliness in the same sort of way. I am scared of being in a house all by myself, because what if something happened? What if I go hurt and nobody knew? Loneliness to me is more than just being physically alone; it is also about being alone in life. I am constantly seeking companionship for this reason. But what could be more frightening than being alone in life?

4. Uncarpeted Stairs

Now this one may seem really silly, but this is a big deal. I am very clumsy, and falling down stairs is one of the most common things that can happen to an uncoordinated person such as myself. Falling down stairs with carpeting is better than falling down stairs that aren’t, so every time that I come across stairs that are slippery and hard, I get nervous. You are more likely to fall down uncarpeted stairs, and it will be much worse of an experience. When I am out in public places or buildings that have stairs I get extremely terrified. There are people around that could in turn make you fall, or worse, see you fall and make fun of you. So I find it best to stick to elevators whenever possible.

5. Failure

This is a common fear. We wait our entire lives hoping to accomplish ours goals, but what if we don’t? A lot of us do not complete all of the goals that we set, but the journey is what matters. I am scared of failing a class in school, or even a simple test. But I am more scared of failing at something bigger like a relationship or a job. Failure is truly scary because we cannot prevent it in all situations. We can only hope for the best and try our best at everything.

Now ever though our fears may stay in the back of our minds, they will never hold me back, and should never hold you back either.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
