5 Things I'd Rather Be Called Than Pretty

Pretty is nice, but there's got to be more, right?

Don’t get me wrong, there is not a girl in the world who does not appreciate being called pretty – myself included. And it's not that being called pretty is a bad thing, but there are so many other ways to describe someone that could mean a little bit more. Here are a few of my favorites:

1. Thoughtful

I love the little things: Noticing that people got their haircut or remembering a little detail about a friend’s day and then asking them about it. When someone remembers that I have a big exam and wishes me luck, or asks me about something I did recently, it makes me feel good. And I want everyone that I care about to feel like that.

2. Affable

Sometimes life is hard and things happen. Being able to talk to people about those things is one of the best ways to get over them and move on. Everyone deserves someone to talk to who genuinely listens, and I aim to be that person for the people in my life.

3. Kind

Being nice to one another is something that really isn't that hard to do, and definitely is not done enough. Regardless of who you are, where you come from, or what your beliefs are, being nice is always the right answer. And a nice human being is the best kind of human being you can be.

4. Intelligent

This is pretty self-explanatory and generic, but it means a lot. Because we live in such a physical world, inner beauty and brainpower can take a back seat to more superficial qualities like our appearance. Your appearance is important, but it's not everything.

5. Authentic

I don't know if having a favorite word is a thing, but if so, this is by far my favorite. Being someone who is genuinely and unapologetically themselves is a trait that I admire the most in people. It's hard to do and rare to come by, but being authentic means so much more than being a pretty face.

And in case you haven't been told in a while, I think you are thoughtful, easy to talk to, kind, smart, and authentic. And hey, you're pretty too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
