5 Things I'll Miss As My College Roommates And I Part Ways

Together or apart, no matter how far, you'll always be in my heart

Before I got to college, I heard an array of different things about college roommates, everything from horror stories to happy endings. I started off with a roommate horror story of my own, but this not so happy ending led me to my roommate happy ending. As our time as roommates are sadly coming to its end, I’ve been reminded of some of the things that have made it the happy ending it is and some of the things I'll miss the most.

1. Late Night Talks.

For some reason, we almost always seem to have our best heart to hearts late at night. Whether it was relationship problems, work or school problems or just needing someone to vent to, I have no doubt I can always count on our late night talks to help. Sometimes we didn't even have a problem, we just stayed up late talking, and even though we may have regretted some of those late night conversations because of early mornings, they always seemed so beneficial. I'll miss being able to knock on each other's doors and know we could always talk no matter what time of night it was (Thank goodness we have cell phones so we don't completely lose this).

2. Sharing Is Caring.

As to be expected, we shared A LOT. A lot of food, a lot of space, a lot of everything. I'll miss our nights of cooking altogether and sitting around the coffee table sharing our creations. I'll miss the random texts asking to reset the wi-fi router because Netflix wouldn't work. I'll miss sharing laughter and tears after good days and bad days. I'll just miss sharing, in general, our space, our lives, everything.

3. Finding Common Interests.

We all came from different areas, different backgrounds, beliefs, and interests. One of my favorite parts of our roommate experience was finding things we had in common, though. Our love for One Tree Hill. Our passion for photography. Our obsession for Grey's Anatomy. The list goes on and on but finding those things gave us a new level of bonding that I wouldn't trade for the world. I'll miss our adventures and random group texts about something that probably wouldn't excite others as much as it does us.

4. Cold Hard Truth.

We've seen each other through some pretty tough times, and we always had each others' backs, but when we needed to hear the cold hard truth, we told each other. Sometimes it wasn't what we wanted to hear, and it may have caused a fight or two, but in the end, it always worked out for the best.

5. Fights.

As odd as it may sound, I'll miss some of the petty, little fights we had. Whether it was a couch cover or the A/C, space in the fridge, or wine bottles on the cabinet. I'll miss them. We always seemed a little closer after those fights, and they made me realize something; if that's all we had to fight about, then I think we were pretty well off. Because let's be honest, it could be WAY worse!

It has become the new normal for us to live together, and when we part our ways and go in our own directions, a part of me will be going with each of you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
