When you think of Valentine's Day, what comes to mind? Chocolate, hearts, candy? Well for me, Valentine's Day means love. And not just significant others. Love between friends, family, myself, of course significant others (if you have one) and love itself. These are my reasons why Valentine's Day is not just about significant others.
1. Friends:
I love my friends. I am the kind of person who will tell my friends I love them, whenever I can. I appreciate the things that they bring into my life. I have friends who I value as much as a member of the family. I like to think that friends are the family that you choose!
2. Family:
I don't know about you but my parents were always my first valentines so I try and do something nice for them just to let know that I love and appreciate them. Especially now that I've moved out and don't see them everyday. It's nice to let them know you are thinking about them on Valentine's Day too.
3. Myself:
Now I know what you're thinking. Myself? How can I be my own Valentine? Well here's my thought: I believe that loving yourself is just as important as loving other people. How can you love others if you don't first love yourself? So I don't care if people think it's weird or odd, I will buy myself some discounted chocolate the day after valentines because I love myself and chocolate and I think I deserve it.
4. Significant others:
The very first thought when one thinks of Valentine's Day. I'd be remiss if I didn't at least acknowledge that yes, significant others are also reasons for love on Valentine's Day. But just because you don't have a significant other, doesn't mean that you are forbidden to celebrate Valentine's Day.
5. Love:
That brings me to my final point about love. So what if you don't have a significant other to celebrate with. Valentine's is not about people, it's about love! A day to celebrate love, in all forms. Love for your pets, love for your kids, love for your friends, love for just about anything! Heck, there's buzzfeed articles out there for finding out who your "fictional Valentine" is. My fictional Valentine? Mr. Darcy, hands down. My very first fictional Valentine, he will always be #1 for me.
My point here is that Valentines Day is about love, and the freedom to be able to love, whoever and whatever we want. And just because it's not Valentine's Day, doesn't mean we shouldn't celebrate love. I celebrate love every time I tell someone I love you. I celebrate love when I show someone I care about them. So, don't forget about love when it's not Valentine's Day. Love is important, every day of the year!
