Summer break has finally arrived. Finals are done, you somehow passed all of your classes, and your dorm room is all packed up. After emotional goodbyes with all of your college best friends, you finally start making your way home. However, as you unpack and start preparing for your summer internship, you realize how much you will miss college life. Your friends no longer live around the corner from you and you are now under the authority of your parents for three months. Although you will now begin counting down the days until next semester starts, it is important to appreciate the little perks of being home for the summer too.
1. No more community bathrooms and shower shoes!
After two years of community bathrooms, I have never been more appreciative of my bathroom at home. There are no more hair-clogged drains and questionable substances on the floor. Anyone who has dealt with community bathrooms understands the struggle of showering every day (since some people clearly do not know how to keep a bathroom clean).
2. You can sleep in a bigger bed with no roommate.
Whether or not you got along with your roommate, it is nice to finally have your own space for a while. There is also no more sleeping in a short, confined dorm bed. Coming home means sleeping in a bigger, and definitely more comfortable, bed.
3. You can eat home-cooked meals!
It is nice to finally take a break from eating rock-hard bagels and questionable meat at the dining hall. There really is nothing like mom’s homemade barbecue chicken and mashed potatoes. Indulge with all of the delicious home-cooked meals that your mother makes before facing the dining halls again next fall.
4. You can see your pets.
During the semester, I would talk about how much I missed my dog at least three times per day. It is also a known fact that I am the most excited to see my dog when I get home. Now, I will see my dog for three months and I could not be more excited.
5. Laundry
It is no secret that colleges do not purchase high-quality washers and dryers. It is also no secret that you’re not an expert at doing laundry. Fortunately, being home usually means that you no longer have to put coins in a washer or, if you're lucky enough, your parents will do your laundry for you.
At home, you'll clothes will be cleaned regularly instead, and you will no longer wait until you run out of socks to do laundry.Although summer can be boring for college students, appreciate and enjoy every part of being home!
