5 Things About Living With Sisters You Take For Granted

More than just the double wardrobe.

Maybe it’s the fact that I’m having my first bout of transcontinental homesickness or, more likely, my sadly depleted wardrobe, which I got used to augmenting over break, but I’ll just admit it: I miss my sisters. As chaotic and oftentimes dysfunctional our relationship is, there are certain things about living with sisters that I never fully appreciated until I went to college. Here are ten things about living with sisters you take for granted:

1) Double Wardrobe

If you have a sister, you get a bonus wardrobe. Double bonus if you share the same shoe size. *Warning: “borrowing” clothes is a slippery slope, and usually ends in screaming and a never ending cycle of stealing your sister’s favorite shirt because she took your heels last night to get back at you for ruining her cute dress.*

2) Live-In Therapist

Having a sister means that, whether they like it or not, they’re going to be there for your venting sessions about that one girl you hate, freak outs over the hot guy who sits next to you in class, and the times you bawl your eyes out when it seems like everything is going wrong in your life. It’s like having your own personal therapist, minus the astronomical bill.

3) 24/7 Food Runs

It’s ten p.m., you’re hanging out in your room, and suddenly crave a milkshake. But you don’t feel like going alone. Cue going into your sister’s room and convincing her to swap her pajamas for sweatpants and jump in the car for your sugar fix. So much better than going alone, because you have someone to belt Taylor Swift with on the ride.

4) Chick Flick Movie Nights

Because your sister is always down to watch How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days followed by Mean Girls and The Devil Wears Prada on a Monday night.

5) Unconditional Best Friend

Cliché it may be, but this is the most underrated aspect of sisterhood. You can say the worst, most unimaginable things to her in the heat of an argument that you wouldn’t dare say to someone who didn’t share your last name. But at the end of the day, you know she’ll forgive you, because your sister is the best friend you get for life, and the joke is on her, because you're not going anywhere.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
