Recently, there has been a lot of buzz surrounding the concept of ‘superfoods’. A superfood is a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial to health. In order to understand the benefits these foods can give, I have researched and composed a list of 5 of the most common and easily attainable ones. Enjoy!
1. Açai
This small berry is native to the forests of South America and is renowned for it’s weight loss and anti-aging properties. Açai contains certain antioxidents that are known for fighting cancer and heart disease. Since fresh berries are hard to come by, they are often sold in frozen tablet or powder form, which make them perfect for blending into fruit smoothies.
2. Chia Seeds
Chia seeds are native to Mexico and contain omega-3 fatty acids, which may help prevent sudden heart attacks and strokes. The seeds also contain fiber and calcium and are nutty in flavor. They are great sprinkled over yogurt or oatmeal and are an easy addition to any smoothie.
3. Seaweed
While consuming seaweed may seem a bit extreme, the sea grown vegetable actually contains multiple important minerals including calcium, magnesium, potassium, iodine and zinc. Seaweed is also packed with loads of omega-3 fatty acids. To incorporate it into your diet, take sheets of seaweed and fill them with your favorite wrap ingredients for a quick and easy lunch.
4. Cacao Powder
Raw cacao powder provides chocolate flavor without the guilt. This powder is rich in flavonoids, which are known to help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow to the brain and heart. It contains almost no fat and is delicious in smoothies.
5. Goji Berries
These berries are native to Tibet and Mongolia, and contain lots of vitamin C. They are also rich in plant-based antioxidants and compounds. Goji berries come dried whole, in powders, and in drinks.
