5 Things I Do To Manage Stress At College

College is a place where all you do is eat, party, and sleep, right?

College is definitely not like the TV shows and movies. I do not know how the characters seem to party all night and still be able to write 20-page papers the next day.

College is all about learning to find the perfect balance between extracurricular activities, spending time with friends, and academics. While having fun and trying new things are huge parts of the college experience, we are all in college to study, take classes, and earn degrees through hard work. That being said, there will often be times in your college career where you may feel overwhelmed.

After hours of reading, studying, and typing it is important to schedule the time to unwind and relax. I definitely get stressed out thinking about all the work that I have to do and the tests I have to study for. With midterms, projects, and exams piling up, I thought I would share what I do to manage stress while at college.

1. Having a morning schedule that prepares me for the day

I think having a routine to mentally prepare me for the day provides a sense of constancy to my school week. For me, I like to do my makeup in morning and then listen to music on the bus while I am heading to class.

Doing my makeup is fun for me because I can be creative and do whatever I want. Some days I like to experiment with different products, while other days I just put on some mascara and chapstick. On the other hand, listening to music is therapeutic and relaxing.

While putting on makeup and listening music, I get a chance to think about my day and prepare myself for the things I have on my plate.

2. Watching TV or reading

Everyone watches Netflix and streams their favorite shows on their laptop. It is important to have to schedule something in your week that is just for you and does not require you to think. I like to watch a show that is entertaining and makes me laugh or read a chapter in my favorite book.

3. Exercise

Schoolwork is very time consuming but I find that getting out of the house and exercising gives my brain a much-needed break from my studies. I will go for a walk outside if the weather is nice or I will go to the gym.

4. Talking to my friends

Although you may feel like you are too busy, it is totally fine to take some time for yourself and talk to a friend. I will call my friends just to talk or to make plans to go out and doing something. I even text my friends who go to different colleges, when I find funny pictures or when I am reminded of a memory that we share. Having good friends to talk to is great because they can relate to what you are going through at college, give you advice, and take your mind of what is causing you feel stressed out.

5. Talking to my family

Talking to your family is a way excellent to decompress as well. I will call my family sometimes just to talk my day and hear about what is going on their lives. While they may not understand actually what you going through and what your classes are like they can still offer you advice and support.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
