With summer coming to a close, most of us are heading back up to school. I for one, am way too excited to be going back since I have a lot going on when I return, such as rush week, an internship, five classes and a job. While I am excited I also know that I’m most likely going to be overwhelmed with everything going on, as will most college students. It’s important to remember to take care of yourself when you go back up to school, so here are a few tips for keeping yourself sane this semester:

1. Learn how to say "no" to people.

This may be difficult for some people, I myself have always been a people pleaser I have always wanted to make everyone happy and in turn dug myself into many holes that have been way too overwhelming to get out of. By far the most beneficial thing I have learned is it’s OK to say “no” in any instance. Put yourself first, always because if you’re too overwhelmed and have too much on your plate you won’t be able to help anyone to your best potential.

2. Eat your vegetables.

Ok, Ok, I know you’ve all heard this one before and now I sound like your mother but it’s so true. Vegetables, especially the dark green ones, are loaded with essential vitamins and minerals to keep your body healthy, energized and happy. Skip snacking on potato chips and fries and eat some raw veggies and hummus. You not only save on calories but you also avoid the gross, sluggish feeling afterwards.

3. Read.

I’m not talking about reading your textbooks for class, find a book you’d like to read for pure enjoyment. When you read you are able to escape your everyday world and get engulfed into the story you’re reading about. Let your imagination soar, clear your mind of everything that lies ahead and focus on the book.

4. Exercise.

A lot of people allow their physical health to take the back seat which is understandable if you have a full load, but we can all find at least 30 minutes to get moving, you don’t even need to step foot in a gym! Just search up on YouTube, “30 minute training circuits”. Physical activity releases endorphins which wipe away stress and allow positive energy to flow through the body. It’ll also help combat that dread “freshmen 15” everyone warns you about.

5. Have some "me" time.

Take a few minutes and set them aside for yourself everyday to do whatever you want. I like to meditate and do some yoga, write a little bit and just chill. It’s easy to forget about yourself with everything else going on during the semester but don’t neglect yourself! If you aren’t healthy and happy everything you’re doing is worthless.

Good luck with this upcoming semester, stay busy but also try your best to stay healthy and relaxed!

"I've only slept nine hours over the past four days, so I'm right on the verge of a nervous breakdown." - Leslie Knope

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
