1. Ask questions.
Don't be that freshman who is all quiet and shaky while the brothers are interrogating him. Be the one that asks the questions. That always makes a good impression! It also lets us know that you aren't looking for any fraternity, but for the fraternity. Show us that the frat doesn't choose you, that you choose the frat. Some of these questions could be: Which sorority are you guys friends with? How many socials do you have per semester? How many active brothers are in your chapter? You want to be seen as more prepared, and less desperate.
2. Dress casual.
When it comes to rush, we all sadly judge a book by its cover. So the outfit you are wearing is the first word you say. Do not try to impress us by wearing a suit for rush, unless you are told to wear said suit. And, please, do yourself a favor and do not show up in cargo shorts or pants. Also, Crocs are strictly prohibited. You will thank me later. I truly recommend a polo shirt, some khaki shorts or pants, and boat shoes. Easy enough, right?
3. Be social.
The more brothers you talk to the better. It is really important that you feel connected with the brothers of that particular fraternity. Remember, they all will decide together if they bid you or not. A good way to do this is by sharing your experiences; talk about yourself, your background, your hobbies, and your goals. A good sports talk has never hurt anyone, either. Just be talkative and you will do just fine.
4. Be cool.
Try to be cool in any way you can. If you hear stories that really impress you, just be cool about it. You don't have to laugh, or ask too much about it. Just don't get weirdly impressed. Remember, you are trying to get into a brotherhood, in most of the cases, with more than 50 guys in it -- so you will hear some crazy stories you have never heard before. Just keep calm, don't freak out, and be cool. In time, you will be the one telling those stories.
5. Be yourself.
This is the most important step in the journey of joining a fraternity and all you have to do is be yourself. Do not try too hard to fit in; you will spend a big part of your life with these guys. Therefore, you must be as comfortable as possible with them. Just be yourself!
