If you're interning this summer chances are you've experienced everything on this list.
1. You're introduced as "the intern".
When your boss, manager, or co-workers introduce you to other people in the office you go by intern. "This is Lauren...the intern." "Are you the intern?" Yes, I am the intern, but I have a name. I guess you could say that you are easier to remember because not many interns roam these grounds. But because you are a "rare species" the full-time employees probably will never use your full name.
2. You get the busy work.
You have larger, more significant projects, of course, but your boss leaves you the dirty work. If he/she forgot to contact someone, send an email, etc, it will probably be your job to pick up where they left off. However, some interns have to fetch coffee. Just be glad you do not have to pick up their laundry from the cleaners.
3. You try to find other interns.
You're young and still in school, so you look to talk to the other interns because they are in your exact shoes. They are your lunch buddies and your walk-out-of-work buddies. Intern 1 and Intern 2 will be your best friends in work during this internship.
4. TAXES. ARE. REAL.
The day you get your first paycheck, you rip the envelope open, see the first number on the top of the sheet and do a happy dance. But then....taxes sneak up on you. It was the gross income. You look down at your net income after taxes and slowly die inside.
5. Waking up early is inevitable.
Sleeping in late, missing a class, and getting notes from a friend is not an option. In the real world, after college, you have to wake up and go to work. If you don't, you explode. Just kidding, you just feel the pain of not getting that envelope in the mail even though taxes took it all.
An internship is a positive experience and is a glimpse of a full-time job. Make the most of every opportunity at your internship, intern, now go get me some coffee.
