It all comes down to the this, we all knew it was coming and its finally here... the end of winter break!!!!
Now, if you're like me, you're not ready to leave home just yet. The thought of leaving home and going back to college is so bittersweet, going back to the dorms and the cafeteria which always closes so early. I know its going to take a while to digest, we are going through the five stages of grief. As we get ready to go back to annoying professors who talk the entire time of lecture, the overly clingy yet adorable friend that beats down your down every five minutes, and of course the super tiny twin bed that you can barely fit on.
1. Denial
As we sit at home looking at own calendars on our phones thinking it can't be time already. Going on to the school website or checking the housing emails about when the exact date the college doors open and classes begin to start. The thought of having to get up everyday to sit in classes that are sometimes as boring as a doorknob or the fact that you have to sit and share your room again. The fact is that, we are just not ready to come back and face our young adult life at the moment, unless we want to go to out or make a doctors appointment I mean.
2. Anger
Now the anger comes in and maybe not even anger just frustration. As you think of how you can no longer just sit and watch television all day without the worries of missing a class that starts in 10 minutes. The frustration of the long grueling unpacking process on which regret the decision of practically taking your whole room back at your house. The thought of trying to make sure that this time no one touches your food in the shared refrigerator since last time a yogurt went missing. Even the loud neighbors you have next door that seems to be having a great debate at 2:00 a.m. and you have a 8:00 a.m. class tomorrow.
3. Bargaining
Maybe if I can wait a couple more days when the break is over it's just the first days of class, I'm not missing anything. Now it's time to hatch a plan to try to delay the inevitable as long as possible. Maybe we can visit that cousin no one likes to visit since they are so far away no one ever comes see them. The conversation with your parents of keeping you and putting on your best puppy dog face to convince them that its not time to leave yet, even though they have been counting the days for you to go back to your school.
4. Depression
As you realize you have to go back to figuring out how to balance all of your classes without drowning in them. You know that you'll be departing from your room that you were so ready for to finally have a regular bed and not a bed that if u turn, you might just fall off. Taking in the home cooked meals that you had almost everyday and most important your family and friends. Thinking of how much your going to miss the familiar surroundings of the place you call home. The horrible process of packing up your stuff yet again and making the long trip makes the idea of laying in bed looking pretty great right now,
5. Acceptance
The silver lining is there in the darkness as you realize wait, I'm going back to college!!! The place where you decide when to go to sleep or can order delivery to eat at 3:00 a.m. in the morning. The place where you met a lot of spectacular people with so many different personalities and fun times. No more hearing your parents telling you what time to be at the house or wondering why on earth your still up at 4:00 a.m. in the morning on Netflix. The time has come to go back to the awesome college life of parties, new experiences, and people!!! Going back to college won't be as sad as it seems, as soon as you see the friends that you missed and talk all about each others winter break. If you are going through these five stages it's OK, it's all going to be great in the end because, come on its college!!!
As you complete the five stages of the ending winter break, just remember that home will always be there and you can always FaceTime or Skype your parents and friends. Going back to a college where parties are practically everyday, networking, growing friendships that will last a lifetime, and on the track of finding yourself and your career. It's time to get back to business and finish the spring semester strong. Might as well, you paid for it.
