If you’re a fan of Demi Lovato’s third album, “Unbroken,” then you’re in for a treat. Her new album, “Confident,” came out this past Friday. She has some pop-rock songs on the album, satisfying those fans who have stuck with her since the start of her career, but there are also some more soulful, church-sounding tracks, reminiscing the sound of her third album. Lovato plays with different music styles and shows the entirety of her vocal range on her new album; however, the lyrics are pretty lackluster. She tries to overcompensate with her vocals, sounding powerful and heartfelt at times, but forced and emotionless at others. Luckily, there are a couple gems on the album that deserve to be heard.
1. "Confident"
The title track starts the album off with energy and a kickass feeling. The music juxtaposes from hard and loud in the verses to soft and almost jazz-like in the chorus. Lovato’s vocals soar through the verses, showing off her power and singing about being a confident “boss.” Songwriters Max Martin and Savan Kotecha prove their melodic talents, lyrically and sound-wise. All in all, this is the type of track to expect from Lovat, but amped up and more mature.
Best lyrics: “It’s time to get the chains out, is your tongue tied up?”
2. "Wildfire"
Lovato drags out her words through breathy vocals in this relaxing track penned by Ryan Tedder. The lyrics lean towards cliched at times, but the melodies make up for it. This is the kind of song to sway back and forth and snap your fingers to while singing along.
Best lyrics: “Melt with your scarlet kiss, like a wildfire, like a wildfire.”
3. "Stone Cold"
Lovato sends goosebumps down arms in this song, singing about trying to get over someone who’s already gotten over her. This is where some soulful R&B sounds show their influence. Lovato proves she’s a vocal powerhouse with this emotional track.
Best lyrics: “Maybe if I don’t cry, I won’t feel anymore.”
4. "Stars"
If you like to dance and love a chorus that builds, then “Stars” is definitely a song to listen to. Penned by a pop-music dream team made of Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub, and Carl Falk (aka the guys responsible for most of One Direction’s second album) along with Demi Lovato, this track is about owning it on a night out. Kotecha’s signature catchy pre-chorus makes it mark. The dance breaks are weird sounding and intriguing. Lovato shows off a different vocal in the verses through autotune but goes back to her old ways as her voice builds from the pre-chorus up and through the chorus.
Best lyrics: “Talkin’ trash, we keepin’ it classy.”
5. "Mr. Hughes"
This song sounds like it belongs in a murder-mystery movie. The pre-chorus is rhythmic and melodic. Lovato shows off her range and a mixture of vocal runs as she sings about the blues in this blues/jazz/soul-inspired track. Lovato sings about getting over “Mr. Hughes.” She doesn’t miss him anymore because she’s got a new boyfriend who’s ten times better. Basically, it’s the musically (not lyrically) grown up version of her song “Behind Enemy Lines.”
Best lyrics: “No pill or drink could get me off the floor.”
Demi Lovato tries a range of musical styles while showing off her vocal range on this new album. The lyrics can be surprisingly unique at times, but bland and emotionless at other times. “Confident” is available for purchase on iTunes, Google Play, and in stores, along with free listening on music-streaming services such as Spotify.
