Hair. It is everywhere. Especially in your dorm bathrooms. Ladies, you know what I'm talking about. It would be nice to just forget about our hair all together like these women, right?
Taking our heads to the chopping block (or a hair dresser, if you're a little less morbid) seems like a great idea in theory. In practice, many of us aspire to long, lustrous, Miley-circa-2012 locks. I know I do. This week, I take a look at five songs about hair inspiration, hair empowerment, and general hair appreciation. #LoveYourLocks.
1. "Side Pony" - Lake Street Dive
"Yes I know I look good" is one of my favorite lyrics from this song and it occurs within the first 20 seconds.
Side Pony just came out last week and it's the #1 jam on my playlist right now. Not only is it about a hairdo, it is about working with what you've got. Lake Street Dive asserts that all you need is a "clip or a scrunchie" and "you're ready." Listen to this song if you're feeling unsure of your look and want to speed up your getting ready process.
2. "Hair" - Gavin Creel, Will Swenson & Tribe
One of my BFFs showed me this song a few years ago and I still can't get enough. Hair is the title song of this popular and must-see hippie musical. "Flow it, show it, grow it". Perfect song to justify sending your mom that sarcastic text when she suggests you need a haircut. Because why cut it when you could grow it?
3. "Put Your Records On" - Corinne Rae Bailey
I just love this song. While this song is a little less hair-centric than the first two, it has a great message. Sometimes, you just have to let your hair down. Take it out of that Side Pony, no matter how adorable. Hair can be a metaphor for letting go of the old, letting in the new, and just going with the flow.
4. "Hair" - Lady Gaga
Okay, so you've probably heard of this one. But that doesn't make it any less awesome. Lady Gaga is always switching up her 'do and setting trends for people worldwide. There is no better feeling than screaming "I AM MY HAIR" to your bedroom mirror before a night out on the town. Trust me, I've done it.
5. "Cut Your Hair" - The Who
Of course, if this article has not convinced you to embrace your hair yet, there's always the option to chop it all off and start over. If you are in that boat, this song by The Who is for you.
No matter how you style your hair, just do you! And maybe update your iTunes library while you are at it.
