Slam poetry is an amazing way for people to express themselves. From depressing, sorrowful tales of a person’s past, to uplifting and encouraging speeches, poetry can make the audience feel a range of emotions. The best kind of slam poetry are the ones that empower you. With each swift lyric, these five poems speak words that make you want to stand a little taller, say “screw you” to anyone who has ever broken your heart or hug the person next to you. (Or all three.)
1. Samantha Peterson “Dead Men Can’t Catcall”
“There are days the body positivity movement does not prepare you for.” Samantha Peterson uses amazing real-life examples of feeling objectified, all the while learning to love and embrace your body no matter your size. With each word she exemplifies what it means for your body to be your own and no one else’s.
2. Simone Stolzoff- “Boyfriend Material”
“I don’t treat women like objects. I treat women like the ocean treats the shore. And I know those are both objects.” This guy is hilarious! With poetic words he comedically shows his confidence and why he KNOWS he is boyfriend material. Where can we get more guys to poetically describe all of the great things they have to offer?
3. Kevin Yang- ‘How To Love Your Introvert”
“Just because I cannot commit the act of small talk does not mean I don’t have huge things to say. Just because I find peace within myself does not mean that I could ever stop wanting to love so hard.” Definitely one of my favorites. It’s hard to get a full explanation from introverts on their mindset due to the nature of who they are, but Kevin Yang puts it beautifully.
4. Elizabeth Acevedo, Pages Matam, G. Yamazawa- “Unforgettable”
When you “realize your name doesn’t match your background.” These three give a lyrically perfect explanation on being a minority, and the names they were given already setting them up for conformity. This one is about having pride in WHO you are, heritage and all.
5. BNV14 Finals - Los Angeles "Somewhere in America”
“They gave awards for best attendance but not awards for keeping your families off the streets.” These three shed light on a part of the world we live in that is almost always in the shadows. This poem will make you feel proud of what you have or proud that what you don’t have is finally being recognized.
