As we get into the holiday spirit, we would assume that along with that comes the season of winter and all its bounties -- like cold weather, warm drinks, and multiple layers of clothing. You think it's going to be magical, just like it is in the movies. But if you live in South Florida, well, your winter wonderland just got about 40 degrees warmer. The sad truth is that if you're spending your winter break in South Florida, or SoFlo, be prepared for oddly warm temperatures, traffic, and trip to a beach or two.
1. Shorts are still in season.
If it’s above 80 degrees in South Florida, no one’s wearing pants. So why would that stop us in December. Yes, you read that correctly. Your Christmas best is a good pair of shorts and avoiding sleeves at all costs. If you go to school in a place that doesn’t have the most bizarre weather of SoFlo, don’t bother bringing down your winter clothes. Why weigh down your luggage with a sweater you wouldn’t be able to wear even if you needed to.
2. You're sweating -- possibly while reading this.
Did I mention temperatures above 80 degrees? Because if not, that’s a real thing. While the humidity may have decreased just a tad, that didn’t ease the issue of us still sweating through every pore during the winter months. Isn’t that just sick? We’re technically in the season called winter, and we’re not feeling anything close to what we could call a winter. If we’re lucky, we catch a break and get a cold front for a day, essentially, just making it windier. Thanks SoFlo; thanks a lot.
3. Heavy traffic thanks to Snowbirds.
While we may not appreciate the warm weather this holiday season, there are those who do; snowbirds. It seems if you live 20 minutes or less away from a coastline here, your town, and roads, are filled with Northerners flocking to the heat. In the midst of their travel plans, they also irritate the hell out of you between their sudden lack of knowledge of how to operate a vehicle and infesting your favorite local restaurants.
4. You can buy a bathing suit and a coat at the same time.
Stepping into a good amount of stores this holiday season, you typically see all of the winter clothes out: coats, scarves, boots, bathing suits? That’s right, if you live in SoFlo and step into a Target, you’ll find not only sweaters, but also some bikinis. It’s only fair that we get to shop for the weather we get even when it’s out of season.
5. You're going to the beach in December.
We may not be getting a white Christmas, once again, this year but we are always guaranteed a sandy one. Living in South Florida means as long as you have a way to get there, and some loose change for parking, you get to go to the beach year-round. It’s not that awful of a toss-up for the warm temperatures. Plus, when everyone gets to post their cool pictures skiing up in the mountains wearing three to four layers, you’re wearing no layers, and you’ll come back with a tan. You win some, you lose some.
