Behind every great writer is an editor. Although editors don't often get the recognition that writers do, they are still an important part of the writing process. Editing requires attention to detail and good knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. No matter what you edit for, here are 5 signs you are an editor.
1. You notice typos everywhere
Editing has gotten you into the mindset of checking for typos just about everywhere. You notice them in other publications, signs, menus-- just about anywhere, and it bugs you how you can't fix them.
2. You have to hold yourself back from correcting bad grammar on social media
The amount of typos or incorrect grammar used by people on social media is insane. Whenever you see someone use the wrong "there" or "your," all you want to do is leave a comment and correct them. Somehow, you hold yourself back.
3. You have strong opinions about grammar rules
If someone were to ask you about some aspect of grammar, you likely have strong feelings about it, and you will argue anyone who disagrees with you. You probably have strong opinions on the Oxford comma as well.
4. You have a dictionary or thesaurus bookmarked
Sometimes, people use words that you don't recognize or you have to make sure they are using the correct meaning. Maybe you even want to change words to break up redundancy. Whatever the reason, you probably reference a dictionary a lot, so it's convenient for you to have it bookmarked on your computer.
5. You end up being the go-to editor for all writing needs
People who know that you are an editor will likely approach you to edit school papers or anything else they are writing. You are the official unofficial editor of your friends and family.
