I have lived in small town in South Carolina for my entire life. Growing up, Christmas was always my favorite time of year because of all the time that I got to spend with my family. Christmas carries different meanings from family to family, but I believe that it has a special meaning for Southern families, especially those in the Bible Belt. Here are some signs (and some of my favorite things) about Christmas in the South.
1. You're dreaming of a white Christmas.
However, you know in your heart of hearts it's not going to happen. You can count the white Christmases you've had in your life on one hand, and on the other you can see why having a white Christmas could have disadvantages—like everything being shut down because here in the South we're just not built for snow!
2. One of the biggest things you're looking forward to this Christmas is the food.
If you've never had a good, home-cooked Southern Christmas, I'm sorry. There's nothing quite like homemade fudge, pecan tarts, ambrosia, and a smorgasbord of casseroles made by some of the best cooks in the world (not to brag, but they can't be much better cooks than my family).
3. Your tree has a pile of presents under it and half of them aren't for your immediate family.
Because you have a ton of other relatives and friends.
4. You can experience four seasons in the four days before Christmas.
Yesterday, the high was 50 degrees. Today, the high was 60 degrees. Tomorrow, it's 70 degrees and on Christmas, it's 80. Gotta love South Carolina weather.
5. Despite the craziness that comes with Christmas season, you wouldn't have it any other way.
Your Southern family may be crazy, but hey, at least they aren't as bad as the Griswolds!
