Millennials. We are like no generation before us. We play games on screens instead of outside, we can publish our every thought at any moment for millions to see, and we have the fastest thumbs of any generation before us. Many people look down upon us and are worried about how we are ever going to be ready to run the world. You cannot blame them. I mean, we live in a generation where the Kardashians are popular for absolutely no reason and they even hold a higher regard to most than even our president. Our generation feels entitled, puts each other down, and is seen as lazy. Why? I believe that these five values that my parents taught me at an early age, is the answer to a better generation.
1. Who are you to judge?
We are the first generation to have massive amounts of apps, websites, and even Facebook pages based on judging people. For this, I ask, why? The time spent on judging others for things that they can't change can be spent picking up a hobby, reading a book, watching another season of Grey's on Netflix, anything. When it comes down to it, "judging others says more about you than it does them."
2. Pretty is, as pretty does.
In a generation where looks mean more than who you are as a person, I think that this should be thought about more. No matter how pretty someone is (or pays to be), a good heart and morals will be prettier than any brand of makeup that you can buy. But most importantly this taught me, simply, "be kind to others."
3. No such thing as letting a friend "borrow".
"What is mine, is yours." Something not too many people live by because we have put too much care into things that can be easily lived without; such as, expensive cars, designer clothes, even just the thought of having a crazy amount of money. We all do it. If we take away the feeling of needing these things and see what others are lacking around us, the world would be a different place.
4. Don't worry, be happy.
Worried about what others are saying, wearing, doing, tweeting. None of this will matter in ten years, yet we are worried about it at every second. Having all of this running through our minds brings our whole morale down. If we would "worry less, happiness will come."
5. Love and be loved.
Because, in the end, love conquers all.
