For all those fans of "Boy Meets World" that are still hesitant about "Girl Meets World" and the expectation the show has created, here are 5 wonderful references from "Boy Meets World" in the new modern show. And hopefully, at the end of the list, "Boy Meets World" fans will be satisfied knowing that the writing is still hilarious, and the cast still gives an amazing performance.
1. John Quincy Adams Middle School
"Boy Meets World" fans should be proud to know that the middle school that Riley attends is the same middle school that Corey attended back in the good ole days. There is a parallel with Corey now being Riley’s teacher, taking (but definitely not replacing) Mr. Feeny’s position. Now the halls look a bit different with a modern feel to it (I mean, it’s been a few years...) but the name is still the same. The kids are different, sure, but it’s still the same middle school that we all saw Corey Matthews grow up in.
2. Topanga’s craze for A’s
It’s no secret that Topanga loved getting A’s throughout her school career. She kept a count and was always the top in her class. There was a continued battle of the smarts with Minkus for who had the most A’s. In "Girl Meets World," Minkus makes a guest appearance and the continuation of the A count continues! Topanga obsesses over her A’s and she even accumulated Riley’s A’s in them as well. Glad to know that she is still her same crazy self.
3. Shawn Hunter
Shawn, Corey’s best friend, is a character that was never forgotten. I was happiest when I saw Shawn Hunter (played by the lovely Ryder Strong), guest star in "Girl Meets World." And Corey was just as happy as I expected him to be to see Shawn (that’s called friendship). Not only did he guest star in one episode, but he also continued in a few more episodes, getting to understand his parallel character, Maya Hart. He is becoming quite the reoccurring character and creates such a dynamic storyline. Also, Corey and Shawn still sleep in the same quirky way as they did back at school when they would not pay attention at all. Shawn snoring, Corey yipping. Classic. Another guest star that made me squeal was his father, Chet Hunter, played by actor Blake Clark. Although it was only Shawn’s imagination, (because of his father’s passing), it was still a nice reunion of past cast members.
4. Angela
The next best thing to Corey and Topanga was Shawn and Angela. They created such an interesting storyline during "Boy Meets World," and then ended up parting ways. Shawn refers to Angela in an episode, and then Angela makes her own guest appearance. Unfortunately, (without giving anything away), she is only back for a small scene for one episode. But it’s still nice to see Angela back again rekindling some old flames with Shawn, or maybe just reaching a conclusion. But that’s the beauty of this show, it’s real. Not every couple is a Corey and Topanga. Oh, the nostalgia of what could have been for all of us "Boy Meets World" fans.
5. Feeny
Ah, yes, the best reference of them all. Mr. Feeny was the proud teacher of Corey, Shawn, and Topanga and taught them well. Anyone who has seen any episode of "Boy Meets World" knows just how important of a character he is. There is also a Feeny poster hidden in the back of one of the sets (Okay, now that’s an Easter Egg that everyone has to watch the show to find.) Mr. Feeny himself even made a guest appearance as we visited his house in the backyard of the Matthew’s house (oh, the memories...) in the season 2 episode "Girl Meets Pluto.” And of course, as Mr. Feeny is best at doing, he gave some stellar life advice. Also, Riley and Maya did their own rendition of Eric’s “Feeny Call.”
Well, there you go. 5 references to "Boy Meets World" in "Girl Meets World." These are 5 reasons enough to check out "Girl Meets World" and watch Riley Matthew’s take on the world on Disney Channel.
