Deciding what you want to do for the rest of you life is hard and picking out what college is best for you is really difficult. There are so many choices when it comes to college: Do you want to go in state or out of state? Private or public? Large or small class size? Rural or suburbs? The point is, being away from home is scary. Even it's just an hour, home is home. But I want to tell you some reasons to go away to school...
1. You get to experience things you've never done before.
Whether it is your first time sharing a room with someone, or the first time you actually have to take care of yourself. The day you move in you are already doing things you haven't done before. There are so many activities and clubs you can do and join in college, some you may not enjoy like you thought you would and others you might absolutely love!
2. You will gain independence.
College is the first time you'll actually be away from your parents, so mom wont be telling you to eat right or do your homework, or even what time to come home. In college you have the freedom to do whatever it is that you want to do. You can hangout with who you want, eat what you're hungry for, and even stay out all night. But as Peter Parker's (Spiderman) uncle Ben once said, "With great power comes great responsibility!" Which means you have to learn how to balance all your newfound freedom.
3. You can reinvent yourself.
I went to a small town high school where differences were not accepted very well. But in college there are so many new people that will accept you for who you are. You don't have to be the same person you were in high school, you can be whoever you want. College is about finding yourself and expressing yourself whether that means dying your hair a different color, changing the way you dress or even joining a club you might like!
4. You appreciate your family and loved ones more.
I love my family and I too often take them for granted. Believe me, when you don't get to see them everyday like your used too, you start to appreciate them so much more. Missing your family is normal, especially when you end up swamped in projects and reading assignments all week and your moms not right beside you encouraging you every step of the way. But don't forget you can always call her, let her calm you down with a few kind words, and feel grateful for her guidance.
5. You appreciate you hometown more.
Like I said, I live in a small town. To be honest, there isn't much to do and I've always wanted to leave my town so I could finally stop feeling bored all the time. However, after leaving I realized that when you are away from home you miss the little things. Suddenly hanging out with all your friends at cookout on a Friday night after the football game is a distant memory. It's always comforting to know you can always go back home when you need to, and its also great knowing you can leave again.
Although home will always be home, going away to college has so much to offer. You will have new experiences, make new memories, and learn a lot about yourself in the process.
