I'm sure you've heard the news. "Gilmore Girls" will be returning on Netflix later this year. The official date has not yet been announced, but the filming for season eight ended in May. The creators of the show have made some changes as far as how of this season will be laid out. Here are just a few things to make the anticipation for the new season that much more exciting.
1. The original creator and producer are back
Most "Gilmore Girls" fans would agree that season seven was not the most satisfying way to end the show. This was mainly due to the fact that the original creator and show runner, Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino who helped produce Gilmore Girls, had to step down from working on season seven due to disputes with the CW network. This left season seven on a different path than was originally intended for the show. However, both of them are back and have created an intended comeback for season eight which ended filming on May 13.
2. There will be four 90 minute long episodes in the season
Essentially, each episode will represent the different seasons beginning with winter, then heading to spring, summer, and ending in the fall. According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino based this off of BBC’s “Sherlock”. “I’m massively into Sherlock and what I love about Sherlock is the format is longer than an hour. They’re their own little mini-movies. It felt like a format that would work well for us on a storytelling level and as writers we would enjoy delving into.”
3. Almost all of the original cast is returning
We will get to see all of our favorites including Lauren Graham as Lorelai, Alexis Bledel as Rory, Scott Patterson as Luke, and Kelly Bishop as Emily. Even all of Rory’s lovers will be back. For a while it was uncertain whether or not Melissa McCarthy would return due to scheduling conflicts. However, she confirmed on The Ellen Degeneres Show that she will be returning to the new season.
There will also be a tribute to Edward Herrmann who played Richard Gilmore and passed away on December 31, 2014.
4. Mae Whitman will have a special appearance
If any of you reading this are as big of a fan of the show “Parenthood” as I am, then you understand that this is a big deal. Mae Whitman plays Lauren Graham’s daughter in “Parenthood.” Their relationship is different than Lorelai and Rory’s relationship, but their mother-daughter bond is still very close. It will be interesting to see what kind of a role Mae Whitman has in Gilmore Girls.
5. We may have more seasons to look forward to
Get excited because this may not be the end of Gilmore Girls. According to both Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, there isn’t a real “ending” to the show in the last episode. Lauren Graham told Entertainment Weekly, “I keep saying, 'Hey, does anyone else notice this is actually not an ending?' [Producers] Amy and Dan just giggle at me." So we will see, maybe there is more to come!
There is so much to look forward to in this upcoming season, and many exciting changes! However, it's nice to know that the cast is staying the same with some new additions. I know I'm ready for a little more Stars Hollow drama.
