Ever since I could hold a summer job, I have had a summer job. A lot of people are extremely reluctant to find a job over the summer, so here are a few reasons why you shouldn't be so afraid to spend your summer working!
1. You learn responsibility
Working a summer job does not sound fun. Honestly, who wants to spend their nice days indoors working? While it may not be the greatest idea, it teaches you how to wake up on time, manage your time and be responsible for your customers. You can take these skills and apply them to your future career.
2. You make your own money
This one might sound silly, but it feels so much better when you know that you paid for something yourself. Plus, you tend to treat the items that you buy with your own cash a little better. And if you want some crazy ridiculous item that your parents deem unnecessary, now you can get it!
3. You don't have to borrow money for your parents to get them a gift
Before I had a job I felt so ridiculous asking my mom for money just so I could go out and get her a gift for her birthday. I'm sure after a few years she caught on, but did it anyways. Now she is genuinely surprised when I get her the gift all on my own.
4. It makes your free time productive
Having no real responsibilities for the summer sounds great in theory, but it does get pretty boring. So why not spend some of your free time making a little bit of money? Most places understand that teens do not want to work their entire day somewhere and will give you 10-20 hours a week. That's still plenty of time to enjoy yourself!
5. You meet new people
There are plenty of people I would have never met if it wasn't for working two jobs-- some of them have even turned out to be my best friends. Plus, these people are with you a good amount of time and you begin to learn them like the back of your hand. This is especially great if you are really shy or have a hard time making friends.
6. You build your resume
It looks really good when you have previous job experience on your resume. People will see that you are already a reliable worker and that you understand the importance of a job. Even if your summer job wasn't the best one you've ever had, you do have a start somewhere.
I hope you enjoy your summer and take these tips into consideration when you're sitting around your house or your friends are busy!
