The television sitcom "The Golden Girls" aired in 1985. It took off as one of the best shows of that decade and arguably became one of the greatest shows ever created. It had a phenomenal writer, Susan Harris, and a plot line that was different from the normal sitcoms of that day.
It involved four mature women living together in Miami: the flirty and southern belle Blanche, strong willed and independent Dorthy, air headed but always optimistic Rose, and Dorthy's spunky mother Sophia. Together, these women were a part of a show that would change television and bring joy to many people, both at that time and still today.
1. Anyone can watch, enjoy, and learn.
Even though this show is centered around women, it has those moments that can tickle anyone's funny bone. There are hilarious moments but also deep ones that can touch anyone with a heart. It's not corny at all. This show displays good advice for some tough situations that can relate to the common person just trying to live their everyday life.
2. They've got comebacks for days!
These ladies have a good amount of years on their sides, so they have seen it all. Which means they have some pretty good, sassy comebacks to all problems life throws at them. Most of them come from Sophia, she's the oldest of the group and, therefore, she knows that she can say whatever she wants!
They can be about Rose and her stupid stories from St. Olaf, Rose and her numerous sexual escapades, Dorthy and her manly physique, or some can be directed at Sophia about how Dorthy threatening to put her in a home! They're great for a laugh (or when you need a good comeback to use on someone else)!
3. It touched subjects that were taboo at the time.
With seven full seasons under its belt, the show touched an array of topics that often times weren't commonly discussed in the 1980's (and especially not on television). There have been episodes about teenage pregnancy, AIDS, homosexuality, life/death of loved ones, and the list goes on. The most important thing though is that these women were accepting of any type of situation and took them head on.
4. It taught you how to be yourself.
These ladies have large personalities and are not afraid to act how they want— no matter how promiscuous, air headed, independent, or old. They were happy with who they were. If they get into trouble, they band together to fix it together.
5. They showed us what real friendship is.
With all the adventures these ladies had, it's no surprise that they formed a close bond over the years. No matter how mad one might be at another, they can get over it and remember how much they care about each other. That's what real friendship is, not always going out or constant buying stuff together, it's sticking by each other's side through everything.
"Thank you for being a friend!"
