Dogs have the reputation for being man's best friend. For women, we have songs that claim are best friends are materialistic, diamonds, makeup, etc. Here are five reasons why the media has it wrong and why cats are actually a woman's (and anybody for that matter) best friend.
1. Cats are Self Sufficient
Domestic Cats need humans for a few things: food, cleaning the litter box, and scratching their head. Even without our help, they can still fend for themselves in a way the domestic dogs cannot. Cats offer their owners the companionship they need with the perfect amount of personal space.
2. Cats Do Not Bark
If you have dogs like my cousin's, you know that they bark at every little thing: kids, trees, other dogs, sometimes their own reflection. With cats, you never have to worry about barking keeping you up at night, and your neighbor's children won't feel like they are about to be attacked whenever they see it on the street.
3. Cats Will Cuddle With You
I have one cat that I love more than anything. When I wake up in the morning, he is right outside my room (though at this point, he really just wants food), and lets me hold him like a child. Whenever I sit down, he is right next to me, and cats don't take up the awkward amount of room that dogs do if they sit on your lap.
4. Cats are Never Not Adorable
I haven't seen a cat that wasn't as cute as a button. From the time that they are born to the time that they are grown, cats never lose that quality about them.
5. Cat Play Things Are Relatively Cheap
Seriously, I cannot tell you the number of times that my mother has come home with a cardboard box that she got for free at the grocery store just so that my cat could either 1) sit in it, or 2) flip it over. Cats also love to play with things like yarn, shoelaces, and their own food, and these items can keep them entertained for hours.
According to humanesociety.org, cat owners also spend a significant amount less yearly for veterinary visits. Each day, cats and dogs are put down in shelters because of the lack or room. So always remember to get your pets spayed and neutered, and to always adopt your pets.
